Better than the main Spider-Man titles have been in a long time. New readers will enjoy a better read than the main Spidey titles and not be bogged down by decades of continuity(although honestly how often is that a problem) and old fans will enjoy a breath of fresh air with new takes on familiar storylines and characters from the good ‘ol days without crap like the clone saga stinking everything up(this title does have its own take on the clone saga but it’s not horrible like the original I swear!). Bendis’ long run on the series since its inception has been great.
Eager to capitalize on the success of Planet Hulk Marvel has given us the son of the Hulk on the planet Sakaar. Skaar was born from a really tough egg dropped from Caiera as she died in an explosion that incinerated her then has the most astounding mental and physical child development you’ll see. Yea, sure. But that’s just all an excuse to give us Planet Hulk fans more adventures on Sakaar and as a big fan of Planet Hulk I’ll be buying this series until it ends.
I’ve been enjoying Paul Dini’s run more than Morrison’s on Batman.
My only gripe with Dini’s run is the art, it looks too much like it was done in photoshop with the coloring(yes I know almost all coloring is in fact done in photoshop but good coloring shouldn’t look that ‘digital’) and the inking looks like it was done with ballpoint pens.
Written and drawn by children’s comic books author Mike Kunkel the characters and stories are meant to appeal to the youngest of us. The series is supposed to take place after Jeff Smith’s well regarded Shazam mini-series but there are inconsistencies especially with the fact that Captain Marvel and Billy Batson were two different entites in Jeff Smith’s mini.
One big thing this series has going for it is this series is more faithful to what Captain Marvel is than what has happened to the Big Red Cheese in the mainstream DCU with Trials of Shazam. If it weren’t for this title all we’d have is that bastardization of the Marvel Family.
When it comes to comic book geeks we think something like Grant Morrison’s run on Doom Patrol is a masterpiece but what are true masterpieces are titles that transcend the hobby to appeal to people other than aficionados of the hobby. A testament to the series is that it appeals to people that don’t normally follow comic books. This will go down in comics history as one of the top comic books in the industry if not the best.
