I’ve been reading comics since late 2006/early 2007, on the heels of Marvel’s Civil War, which launched Punisher War Journal (easily one of my all-time favorite comics) and put Iron Man in an interesting place shortly after I gained interest in the character and comics. Punisher and Invincible Iron Man are still my two favorite titles and characters.

Here are my favorite creators and the books that make me love them:

-Matt Fraction (Invincible Iron Man, Uncanny X-Men)

-Warren Ellis (Astonishing X-Men, newuniversal, Supergod)

-Jeph Loeb (Hulk)

-Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Ultimate Comics: Avengers)

-Brian Bendis (Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man, Spider-Woman)

The Good, The Bad, and the Bendis

by J4K3 at 04:19 PM on December 08, 2008 16:19

So its been a good while since I last put a new entry into this blog, and all I can think of to talk about is the good, the bad, and the ugly of Secret Invasion.

THE GOOD: The last pages of SECRET INVASION #8 left the Marvel U in a very interesting place, one that no one really expected. It is a bit annoying to know that DARK REIGN will be stamped on most of my Marvel books, but that’s really nothing new for me, considering that I got into comics just as THE INITIATIVE was being stamped on everything. So, in a way this all takes me back to my first year of reading and that sense of not knowing what’s going to happen next.

THE BAD: In spite of anything positive I can say about the INVASION/REIGN, I am still very much saddened by the fact that everything I’ve come to know and love about the Marvel Universe (the Initiative, the importance of the S.H.R.A., etc.) has all be swept away by the ideas of one of my least favorite Marvel creators.

THE UGLY: If SECRET INVASION had been a five-issue mini with only one or two tie-ins, I would be very very happy about the whole thing. However, after eight months and 3.99 an issue for the main mini alone, unjustified hype, a million tie-ins, and a growing hatred of the word ‘skrulls,’ I’m just glad to see that it’s finally (somewhat) over. Eight months ago I had no reason to dislike Bendis, but right now I just want him to write his Avengers books and Ultimate Spider-Man and STAY AWAY FROM THE MARVEL EVENTS. The new direction and landscape of the Marvel U is hardly worth the months of annoyance provided by Bendis and the over-done hype.

On the flip-side, I’m interested enough to be picking up New Avengers. Dammit. SCREW YOU FOR MAKING ME INTERESTED, BENDIS!
