That’s certainly an interesting take on it. He might have been clever and he probably even realized Riley left that shot there but he was also a relapsed junkie. I’m not sure he could have just said no without a taste first. I was waiting the entire 4th issue for something to go terribly wrong for Riley and was kind of shocked by the ending. I think that made me like it more. The bad guys have to get away with it sometimes, right?

Dan [Support Emeritus] said:

Freakout proved himself to be pretty clever, so I don’t think he took the hot shot Riley left around. I thought the fact that we only “experience” Freakout’s death via a report from Brock, who was, if I recall correctly, a high school friend?, made me think he & Freakout may have conspired to make Riley think he got away clean. I’m not 100% sure about this, I need to go back and re-read earlier issue, to see if Riley was still going to be living in the same town as Freakout, for instance… anyway, it’s noir, I can’t imagine things would have worked out perfectly for the protagonist – that would be a first in Criminal, wouldn’t it?

FrogMan says:

just thought I’d update you on my progress through Outlaw Nation. I’m up to issue 8 or so and while it took me a while to get acquainted with the characters and to understand that this guy was really 100 years old, I’m starting to really like it. Probably much better as a collected book cause I’ll be honest I’m not sure I would have gone past issue #2 in monthlies. Also the B/W thing really doesn’t bother me, almost as if it was meant to be presented in B/W… Looking forward to reading more…

FrogMan says:

Dan, I just received my Outlaw Nation trade and you know what’s interesting? While it was released under the y DC Vertigo banner at the time, it’s reprinted with a big Image logo on it…

What bothers me is they don’t realize or believe they are being offensive.

I just read you comment about the Nexus books being ready for solicitation in May. Great news! I just got Nexus #99 and #100.
It has been such a long time since I read any Nexus, I am going back and re-reading Nexus:Nightmare in Blue before I read the new issues.
I have actually been on a Steve Rude kick for the last month or so. I got his Captain America mini (excellent), Spiderman (excellent), Children of the Atom (also excellent), Thor (excellent), and his giant size Legends of DCU #14 (most excellent).
I am also thinking about buying his recent “Artist in Motion” art book. Did you ever look through it?

Yeah, I totally understand the need to change HI’s free shipping policy, itt just doesn’t work out very well for me as I don’t buy much AND our Canadian dollar is worth so little, currently.

I will continue to pop in and hang out here, though. I promise not to spam too much, though! ;)

Dan [Support Emeritus] said:

Sorry to hear our necessary shipping changes won’t work for you… just remember that being a HI community member doesn’t require that you buy anything, so you can still hang out & socialize, let folks know when & where your work is being published, etc.!

reply view context
Jason Copland says:

Thanks, Dan! Glad you dug it. I still don’t have me a copy (my copies from HI should be here in a week or so), yet, but I did see a copy a friend bought. It turned out pretty nice, if I do say so myself. My first time published in colour!(Well, first time published in colour for sequential work)

Cheers!
Jason

Hey Jason – just picked up Perhapanauts #5 – nice job on “the evaluation”! (I’m not sure what to make of the rest of the comic, this is the first issue I’ve read…;-) )

Alex Sheikman says:

Dan,

Garcia-Lopez is an awesome artist. I loved Twilight (and “Cinder & Ash”, “Deadman”, “TeenTitans”, “Jonah Hex”…) one of the best storytellers around who makes his art serve the story and not the other way around (as Neal Adams started doing later on in his career).

I am also looking forward to Vigilante by Leonardi, you guys are sending me that one and I am real curious about it. Leonardi was one of my all time favorites with his work on Cloak and Dagger, Spiderman 2099, Batgirl, and Nightwing being just awesome. But the few recent things he has done have just been “OK” (like the Superman fill ins, and the Justice League story arc).

FrogMan says:

Don’t remember if it’s with you or another American friend to be honest, guess we’re both getting old. ;)

Anyway, that’s very cool. Were you reading them in English? I’m French first, English second, so I read them in French. I also read all of the Tintin books at one point or another, but the humour in the Asterix ones is what grabbed me more and why I simply liked them more.

There have been three live action Asterix movies that I know of and of the three, I’ve only seen one, Mission Cleopatra. I thought it was very funny and pretty well done and that it remained quite true to the stories I knew and loved as a child. I saw it in French though, i.e. non-dubbed, no clue if a dubbed version would be good or not, although I read on wikipedia that the English dubbed version was Americanized a little bit.

No clue if that would interest you or not, but with the Holidays coming, TV will be showing plenty of animated Asterix movies in French around here. I could record them and send you the DVDs. That is, if you can understand French… :)

Dan [Support Emeritus] said:

Asterix & Oblix are awesome – I grew up reading those, too (and Tintin). But maybe we talked about this already? Can’t remember… anyway, I recently learned there were some live action Asterix movies… have you seen them? If so: any good?

Bummer. I remember a few years ago Wrightson was asking people to send him high resolution scans of the illustrations that they purchased from him because he was going to publish his own version of the book. It was going to cost $300-400…but I wonder if he gave-up on that and gave the files over to Dark Horse for this new book.

Dan, great Berni Wrightson story! And an awesome surprise in the form of a Ralph Reese story…that is simply excellent. All just in time for the Frankenstein reprint (I think I now have 2 copies of it, paperback from when Marvel published it, a hardcover from a few years ago when Underwood reprinted it…and now I am thinking of buying this one as well if the reproductions are good).

James R. Rummel says:

Great idea! I’ll try it.

Dan [Support Emeritus] said:

Well, I try to avoid works by authors who think I’m an idiot, too, which is a great way of putting it. Unfortunately, I’m not a big reader of the superhero stuff these days, other than a sort of unkickable nostalgia addiction to the sort of 1960-70s cosmic space opera-type stuff that’s still going on in occasional special series like Annihilation, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc.

I think your best bet is to start a forum thread asking for adivce. Most of the folks there follow the current crop of superhero titles closely and enthusiastically. Since the ways to find folks on HeavyInk are mostly via interaction in the forum, following linked reviews, etc., I’m guessing not many folks know your blog is here (there IS a list of all public personal profiles, but it’s currently not easy to find/notice – something we’ll shortly be addressing). Anyway, I think folks would be very happy to recommend stuff to you in the forum.

That’s cool that your mom got you into comics. I’m scared that because I like comics, me kids are going to rebel and like… football or something dastardly like that.

And whenever I read or watch something horrid I think about all the people it went though that said, “Yes, this is worth risking out money on.” There’s writer, artists, colorists, inker and letterer (all depending of course)… then comes more than a few editors. Don’t ever blame one editor for a work, there’s always an editor editing an editor. Then marketing and other departments read it, or at least sample the titles occasionally.

And ALL of those people said… “YES! We are going to sink some money into THIS project because we think people are going to buy so much of THIS that we’ll make money off of it. THIS is where it’s happening! THIS is where it’s at!”

That’s usually where I start crying in horrible movies. Why didn’t the actor at one point just look up and say, “Seriously, NO ONE is going to sit through this shit. Am I the only one to notice this?”

reply
daynah says:

I wont lie. I don’t know half the words you said there. My expertise in syntax does not carry over into semantics.

Being business savy is very important. I go to a university that has a high ranking business school and we get business lessons injected into all of the disciplines. It’s constantly, “How can I make money with this?” and “How can I market this?” I know, because of this training, that I’m better off going into the real world with this very practical degree, that someone with a a degree from a nose-in-their-books school.
