I am enhanced by pants.
Yes I subscribed to X-Force when I was a kid...but this still made me do a spit-take at my desk - ladies and gentlemen, The 40 worst Rob Liefield drawings
Oh, and it's been pointed out to me that Bookhunter and other Shiga books are available to read for free at shigabooks.com. But you should buy them if you can, because you are a good person.
If you haven't bought Jason Shiga's "Bookhunter" yet, you are a damn fool. I can't believe I only just bought it, having leafed through it sometime in '06. It's brilliant.
"Bookhunter" is what I can only describe as a police procedural thriller, if the public library had its own police force. The book is set in 1973 and follows a case of a rare bible stolen from the Oakland Public Library. Detective Bay and the Library Security Force are tasked with the books recovery and the capturing of it's thief. What follows is a two-fisted skewering of just about every cliche in crime fiction. The book is fast paced, helped by the frenetic sepia-toned artwork.
I bought a copy for a librarian I know and I cannot wait until I get to give it to him.

This is a great site, I'm really happy to see such thought to usability and solid design on a comic site. I'm going to be moving more and more of my subs here - though I don't think it will replace my visits to my local store, after all I'm lucky enough to work within walking distance from Isotope in SF. I really hope HI gets enough of a client base to increase their selection. What follows is a list of some books I'd love to see them carry (in no particular order):
- The Surrogates by Vendetti and Weldele - This just slayed me, gorgeous, edgy art combined with tight storytelling with a dash of Phillip K Dick for good measure
- Whiteout vols 1&2 by Rucka and Lieber - I was white-knuckling it through both of these thrillers. Who doesn't love a badass like Marshall Stetko?
- Persepolis by Satrapi - I can't think of a book I'd rather see made into a movie. Also, you should read how she handles Deborah Solomons stupid-ass headwrapping questions in this NYT Interview. Seriously, anyone who can get the words "goose anus" printed in the newpaper of record is my new hero.
- American Born Chinese by Yang - This book should be on every 8th grade English course's required reading list
