Bookhunter pt 2

Oh, and it's been pointed out to me that Bookhunter and other Shiga books are available to read for free at shigabooks.com. But you should buy them if you can, because you are a good person.

Bookhunter

If you haven't bought Jason Shiga's "Bookhunter" yet, you are a damn fool. I can't believe I only just bought it, having leafed through it sometime in '06. It's brilliant.

"Bookhunter" is what I can only describe as a police procedural thriller, if the public library had its own police force. The book is set in 1973 and follows a case of a rare bible stolen from the Oakland Public Library. Detective Bay and the Library Security Force are tasked with the books recovery and the capturing of it's thief. What follows is a two-fisted skewering of just about every cliche in crime fiction. The book is fast paced, helped by the frenetic sepia-toned artwork.

I bought a copy for a librarian I know and I cannot wait until I get to give it to him.

Some Books I'd Like To See HI Sell

This is a great site, I'm really happy to see such thought to usability and solid design on a comic site. I'm going to be moving more and more of my subs here - though I don't think it will replace my visits to my local store, after all I'm lucky enough to work within walking distance from Isotope in SF. I really hope HI gets enough of a client base to increase their selection. What follows is a list of some books I'd love to see them carry (in no particular order):
 • The Surrogates by Vendetti and Weldele - This just slayed me, gorgeous, edgy art combined with tight storytelling with a dash of Phillip K Dick for good measure
 • Whiteout vols 1&2 by Rucka and Lieber - I was white-knuckling it through both of these thrillers. Who doesn't love a badass like Marshall Stetko?
 • Persepolis by Satrapi - I can't think of a book I'd rather see made into a movie. Also, you should read how she handles Deborah Solomons stupid-ass headwrapping questions in this NYT Interview. Seriously, anyone who can get the words "goose anus" printed in the newpaper of record is my new hero.
 • American Born Chinese by Yang - This book should be on every 8th grade English course's required reading list
There's a whole slew more that I don't have time to write about. Hopefully they'll be offered here soon. I'm off to yell at my uncle dickball yet again about sending me porn at work.

Ooo! I thought of something Pants enhance, but DONT make better! Summer heat and humidity. \\ Living in a house with no AC, and refusing to wear anything but pants… Yah.

I loved you’re link, it really made me think…shit, I’m rhyming again…

I have some music for you, e-mail me at toddmichaelr@gmail.com ???

I did, we just closed the doors last month after 2 years. It was a labor of love called Fakescience. We distributed independant artists and microlabels. We sold in album and EP format, $5 for albums, $2 for EPs. Mostly electronica, some indy rawk.
Hey, you own a music store?
Will do, I do to. Also...VIKINGS!
Let me know how Northlanders is, really like the art!

Recent Reviews

Lots of exposition in this first issue, the story gets kind of muddied with it. I'm not sure if I'm liking the characters yet - too slick seeming yet for a gritty detective story. The tough/girl porn star thing seems a bit gratuitous and a little on the nose.

The elements are there for interesting stories though, but the first issue left me feeling a little underwhelmed.

A friend of mine shoved this book in my hand and said "I'm not telling you anything about this other than you will love it". I'm lucky to have friends that know me this well, although I'm hard pressed to think of someone who wouldn't enjoy this ride. I mean Nicola Tesla, Mark Twain vs the Robber Barons and their henchmen Edison and Marconi? A yeti? Aw hells yeah!
