I was born in the distant year of 1971, in the days before the internet or push-button phones. I learned to read from the comics that my dad would bring home from the paper mill. Those books were technically classified as “scrap paper”, but to me, they were the start of a life-long obsession!

as I said, very cool start to your comics reading and I’m sure it helped you get a head start in reading. I did something similar with my 11yo son last year, got him subscribed to Marvel Adventure Spider-Man. Sure by age 11, he knew how to read quite well, no big deal, but thing you might not know, or realize, is that I (and him by rebound) am French Canadian. French is our first language. I picked up English through some school and a lot of computer games playing and TV watching. He’s been watching English TV for a while, but getting him hooked on a comics he enjoyed, in English, has helped him in his reading and understanding of a second language. :)

It is a rare beginning, I think. It was also the reason why I was so far ahead of most everyone else in “reading” when I started school. Of course, that’s ALL I was ahead of them on….heh.
