FrogMan is on Twitter! [Member Since: February 20 '08]

I’m a martial arts enthusiast who owes (or blames for) his recent discovery of the world of comics to his 7 and 14 year old sons. Big fan of the usual Marvel suspects (Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Avengers) again mostly because of them little ones, I’ve also grown to love more mature stuff as well as some great indie series. Add to the mix some occult of supernatural reading and you got my pull list.

Asterix and Obelix will always hold a dear place in my heart, as they were the comics I grew up with…

It looked great in color, too – handy that the art is such that it works either way… did you get to the issue that explains why Johnsons live so long?

FrogMan said:

just thought I’d update you on my progress through Outlaw Nation. I’m up to issue 8 or so and while it took me a while to get acquainted with the characters and to understand that this guy was really 100 years old, I’m starting to really like it. Probably much better as a collected book cause I’ll be honest I’m not sure I would have gone past issue #2 in monthlies. Also the B/W thing really doesn’t bother me, almost as if it was meant to be presented in B/W… Looking forward to reading more…

Dan [Support Emeritus] says:

Yeah, I picked up that trade, too – I assume the rights reverted to Delano and he took it elsewhere to have a trade printed…

FrogMan said:

Dan, I just received my Outlaw Nation trade and you know what’s interesting? While it was released under the y DC Vertigo banner at the time, it’s reprinted with a big Image logo on it…

reply view context
Andy says:

Right. In general I’m a purist for color, but the art in Outlaw Nation is just as good without.

FrogMan said:

interesting, so it’s getting the “archives” treatment fomr Image, a bit like the Noble Causes archives and Savage Dragon books. Better black and white than not at all I guess.

reply view context
Andy says:

Yeah, and it was originally published in color, the Image version is black & white.

I’ve been meaning to pick that up myself…

FM, please respond to my post from ~1 hour ago. I wholeheartedly cannot handle when people get the wrong impression about something, and I feel really bad about what happened. Please read it if you haven’t yet and hopefully that will shed some light on a few different things. Just as you said about yourself, as “bouncy” as I am, the last thing I want to do is start drama on I think THE last place on the internet where we’re all friends. Thank you.

Alex Sheikman says:

Awesome! Thank you for taking the time to write down your thoughts and I totally appreciate the compliment.

If you have enjoyed the first series even a little bit, you will totally dig the sequel. Even a hard nose reviewer like Steven Grant, who did not care for the first arc at all, gave the second series a thumbs up (he actually called it the “most improved series of the year”…right before Archaia went into restructuring and the publication stopped).

I just talked to the publisher and everythign is still on track for June publication…so I look forward to reading your thoughts on the sequel :)

By the way, if you are feeling up to it, can I suggest writing down your thoughts about the book in the review for HI? I always enjoy reading reviews of books I know nothing about before I decide if I am going to buy it or not. More reviews would make it easier for other folks on HI to decide if they want to try it (or not).

Again, thank you.

FrogMan said:

Finished reading the Robotika hardcover last night and thought it was very good. Yeah, a bit spacey and out there, but very good. Probably the best compliment is that it made me want to read more. There, you have succeeded. ;)

I must admit I’m a sucker for everything samurai. :)

reply view context
Alex Sheikman says:

I was a bit slow in my response..sorry. I was going to say that I tried to make “For A Few Rubles More” as stand alone as possible (there is of course some carry over…like Honcho, the main bad guy, first appears in “Bronski’s Tale” in the first collection), so you should be able to read it as is. And of course if there are any questions I am here to answer them :)

This might sound odd, but I wanted to warn you. The first collection is kind of…dreamy. It is not a straight up action rush like “Rubles”. I got a lot of attention/compliments on the art, but some folks felt that the story was a bit “too out there”. Having said that, thank you for your support and I look forward to hearing your opinion :)

FrogMan said:

forget that last question, it’ll be irrelevant as I went looking for it and found it oh so cheap on amazon.ca marketplace. ORDERED! :)

Me loves samurai story, will let you know what I think when I read it.

Very cool! Thank you for the kind words and I look forward to hearing what you think :)

FrogMan said:

hey Alex, just thought you’d like to know that shipper Andy was kind enough to include a Robotika card in my shipment I received last week. It’s postcard size but with pictures on both size, pictures I assume are the covers of issues #1 and #2 based off what I can see on HI. It’s quite awesome and has now become my official bookmark for when I’m reading a trade. :)

not much, again some cleaning up. Of all the ones I unsubbed from, only three were real cuts, the other were either minis (SI and such) or one shots that had all shipped. Of the real, I cut Mighty Avengers, which I had been reading since #1, only because it didn’t appeal to me anymore. Sinec Bendis is leaving it with #20 which just shipped, it was time to cut it.

Re: Asterix – I read them in English. They’ve always been pretty easy to find around here (Massachusetts), and I even have some I bought on a trip to London when I was 10. While I did take some French lessons when I was about that age, I’ve long since forgotten anything I may have learned… but thanks for the kind offer! Thinking about it a bit, I have a friend who travels to Europe regularly and who is a fan of the same comics – he might have translated DVDs, if they exist.

Thanks! while I never did martial arts for any kind of trophies, I’m quite proud of them. Much prouder of the simple fact I achieved Shodan, if you know what I mean, but the competitions forced me to deal with the pressure and to work on my forms intensively. I’m sure it paid off in the grand scheme of things.

The two long shiny sticks we’re holding are called a bo, or long staff. It’s a weapon with which we do a form, or kata. While ours are all shiny and very light, the bo used to be a traditional weapon in Japan, but theirs were sturdier and heavier. The bo is also TMNT’s Donatello’s weapon of choice. ;)

fwiw, you the forms we performed that day in this little youtube video

Quote from Wiki… “Series creators Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona left the series at issue #24 of the title’s second volume. After Joss Whedon began to write the series, it began to suffer delays and has recently fallen into a tri-monthly schedule. Marvel has announced Terry Moore, creator of Strangers in Paradise will take over the title after Whedon leaves, with Humberto Ramos on art.”

FrogMan said:

LOL! For some reason, and I’m basing this only on what I’ve read from you here and on your blog (yeah, I did venture over there), you don’t seem like the kind of people to hold something like that inside no matter who you are around. :)

About that thread, I thought about something similar but srt of discarded it since not everybody receive their comics at the same time. I get mine about a week after they’ve shipped, so we’re about a week late compared to what everybody else in the comics world is talking about. The “pull” threads are cool cause they are drumming up interest into what’s coming up.

Hey dude. Just realized I don’t think I’ve ever “blurbed” you. :) Wanted to say I appreciate your posts and your blog entries. I enjoy reading about the titles you are trying out. I usually try to stay away from reading CBR because I got tired of the spoilers. I started out there though before HI came along. Anyway, you save me the trouble of going there! :) Thanks.

Hey, I was thinking about checking out a few more Vertigo titles than I am currently and was going to give Young Liars a go. How has it been so far?

Any other vertigo books to try?

Thanks for the link for DCU #0 by the way!

Amos says:

Heh. Yeah my master says to not use chairs any more and just do the horse stance all the time. And yes, Taichi and Kungfu are all about being rounded and relaxed all the time. The way I’m learning it, taichi is just kungfu slowed way down, so you can master the details of every movement. I tried Karate once, and didn’t like it, but that was because the teacher was more interested in showing off his weapons than anything else. What makes Kenpo Karate different from normal Karate?

FrogMan said:

Just recently received my Shodan (black belt) in Kenpo Karate. Been practicing it for five years now.

Did an hour or so of kungfu at a seminar back in early March. It kicked my ass with its freaking low horse stance, but it was very cool. So different in movements from what I’m used to though, much rounder, if you know what I mean. Taichi, I know very little about.

Amos says:

You bet. I see you also do martial arts. What kind? I’ve recently taken up kungfu and taichi.

Hey, are you planning on picking up DC’s Final Crisis? I’m not a fan of Grant Morrison’s rhaz al Ghul crossover, but man this book is getting so much hype!

Hey, by the way, have you read any of the Sin City trades? I was thinking about picking a few up, but the “library” collection is out of stock, and I wonder how good the quality is on the 2nd printing stuff.

Knew about the prologue, but not the Saga Issue. Thanks.

yay, another Marvel fan!!! Marvels rocks! You probably already knew about it anyway, but Marvel have made the Secret Invasion Prologue issue and the Secret Invasion Saga issue available online. See my mini blog posts for more information and links.

What would you say you’ve been enjoying the most from your pull so far(your “top of the stack” so to speak)?
Maleev’s work on Daredevil, with Brian Bendis writing I thought, was amazing! I ended up picking up the hardcovers liking it so much, so I can’t wait for Maleev to be back on Daredevil(even if its a cameo or whatnot).
Btw I read my friends copy of SI #1 great stuff, can’t wait to see where it goes!

I meant, we can read snippets of your blog posts on the frontpage, but the blog isn’t showing on your profile page for some reason. Maybe you have it for friends only. That way, I read about a webcomic on the snippet, but it cuts off before I get a link. Quite a teaser… :D

so I keep reading tiny blog posts on the front page, stuff about a webcomic and I come here and nothing to read, that’s not nice, not nice at all :p

I wanna see that webcomic!!! ;)

I’m really interested to see what they’re going to do with this series. They touched a little bit on Fury and Wolverines’ pasts early on in Ultimate X-Men, so I’m wondering if they’re going to keep that or pretend that it never happened. I wish they wouldn’t tease us with announcements and then delay the series for a year. I’m still waiting for Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk……Damn you Bendis!!!

FrogMan said:

just saw this Bendis feature about Ultimate Origins on CBR and thought you might be interested…

enjoy!

I forgot all about Iron Fist. I have the first several issues. Adding it now. :)

FrogMan said:

true, but tell me, speaking of martial arts comics, how come I don’t see Immortal Iron Fist on your pull list? Did you try it and not like it?

It’s really high on my list of favorite books, very well done stuff…

reply view context
Eric says:

Yup, I saw a number of good stuff on your list that I would like.

I think we both love a good story, and have a soft spot for martial art stories.

FrogMan said:

funny how you brought me here, then I added stuff from your pull list to mine and it seems to have somehow turned around a bit and you’ve added some of my pulled stuff to yours lately.

We do have similar tastes… :)

RobertS says:

I honestly have no idea what’s up with Ultimate Origins. I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be a full length mini-series, but I’m guessing it’s just hit chronic delays that seems to plague Ultimate mini-series. I didn’t order the first issue because I thought they would have been out with the trade by now. My misguided faith in comic book timeliness…

Ultimate Hulk vs. Wolverine was slated to be finished a year and a half ago and it still has about 3 issues to go. The worse part about that is that it was supposed to coincide with Ultimates 2: Grand Theft America and now it’s nowhere to be found.

FrogMan said:

I know you are quite into the Ultimate Universe so I’m turning to you on this one. Regarding Ultimate Origins. Has the issue showing up here ever shipped, or is this something that got delayed and delayed. I see there’s a Ultimate Origins series slated to start in June on the Marvel website…

Sorry to double post, but you might wanna check out Frank Miller’s Daredevil Run, if only one collection Daredevil Visionaries #2. It’s a great book that covers the best of the daredevil stories, and has a ton of ninja’s etc. Elektra Lives is another cool ninja book, also done by Frank Miller.

Pat1337 says:

Hey man awesome pull list, I recently got into comics myself and man I’m having a blast. I’m a huge brubaker fan myself and I’m absolutely loving Daredevil, Criminal, and Iron Fist.

I saw a little info on the lone wolf and cub deal, I havent read it myself but I heard its great. If you want to read Frank Miller’s take on the samurai(in a futuristic crazy setting) I recommend checking out Ronin. Its a crazy book and definitely bizzare, but in retrospect I think its a fantastic read.

I’d love to hear your picks for samurai films as well! My personal favorite are Sword of Doom, Yojimbo, and probably Zatoichi(the new one).

A really great book to check out, though not a samurai or martial arts book, is JMS’s Thor. It’s on issue 6 right now and man this book is really mature and a great book to jump onto. The art is really fantastic and the story as well. It’s definitely going to be one that people talk about.

The only thing that would make HeavyInk any better is if all the comics were free.

FrogMan said:

I agree, it is indeed very cool. I had had some recommendations from another message board but HeavyInk is really incredible in terms of discovering new stuff. The last 11 in my pull list (starting with Locke & Key) were all either added after reading a review here (As for Fell, the FF special), comparing pull lists of people reading stuff similar to what I like (Locke & Key, Gate of the east wind, by simply looking at the “NEW” page (the three twilight crusade titles and you can add Blood Bowl), or again from the recommendation page (Kick ass, Criminal, Doctor Who). Very, very stoked with how HeavyInk is improving my comic fun so far. Will have to control myself a bit though cause I’m getting close to the max I wanna spend… ;)

Matt says:

It is so cool that you’re finding all these new books through HeavyInk. I’m doing the same—Atomic Robo is one that I would never have picked up were it not for HeavyInk. There’s some very cool stuff happening on the fringe of the mainstream and I think this site is ready to do a lot to promote it and make it more visible.

FrogMan said:

thanks for your input (re: Buffy). Base don it and Robert’s input, I’ve decided to pass on it. I’m lacking time to watch past series and there’s still plenty for me to read anyway…

I did pick up another series based on another of your reviews: Fell. Will be getting the trade first, then have added it to my pull list. Saw some previews and liked what I saw very much. Thanks for your reviews, they’ve been very helpful.

This is gonna sound very l33t but Heavy Ink rocks. I’ve discovered a ton of new stuff I probably would not have known about in the one week I’ve been around here.

Matt says:

That is a tough question FMan…if you can find a cheap copy of issue 1, I recommend going for it. Or if you have NetFlix and a lot of time, rent some Buffy DVDs and see if it’s your speed. I can’t really say for sure cause I’m a fan of the show, so reading the comic was no big deal to me.

FrogMan said:

I’ve read your review of Buffy season 8 and it, along with the good review I’ve seen from other friends, is making it tempting. Thing is, I’ve never read, nor followed the TV series. You think a newcomer to the series could pick it up from issue #1 of season 8, not be completely lost and would enjoy it? Thanks in advance.

reply view context
RobertS says:

Reading your blurb on Matt’s page:
As much as I hate to say it, if you haven’t seen much of the TV series, I would hold off on Season 8 for a bit. I suggest seeing if your library or video rental place has the DVDs of Buffy and watch the show a bit. I only say this because I wouldn’t want you to be turned off by the fact that you have no idea who these people are.

Then again, I started watching Buffy when it was on Season 5 and I kept up with that while watching reruns of the older episodes at the same time.

In conclusion, I have no idea what you should do.
:-) I guess try it out and if you don’t mind being thrust into a story that’s already on it’s eighth season, more power to ya.
