I’m a martial arts enthusiast who owes (or blames for) his recent discovery of the world of comics to his 4 and 11 year old sons. Big fan of the usual Marvel suspects (Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Avengers) again mostly because of them little ones, I’ve also grown to love some more “grown up” stuff (Ex Machina & Y: The Last Man among others). I also love a good Heaven vs Hell battle (Hellblazer anyone?).
Asterix and Obelix will always hold a dear place in my heart, as they were the comics I grew up with…

Froggie's Pull List: House of Mystery
A new offering on DC’s Vertigo line, House of Mystery #1 is set to ship this week, on or about May 7.
There’s a special sneak peek available over on the DC Website. I say special sneak peek because it’s not only a collection of pages from the first issue, but it has been put together as a PDF to look like a mini issue, with added Vertigo characters on the side edges of pages, characters that will not usually be appearing in the House of Mystery series.
You can also read a bit more about the series, a re-imagining of the long-running DC Comics anthology series by the same name that ran for 321 issues from 1951 to 1983, in an interview with series co-writer Matthew Sturges over at CBR. The other co-writer is Fables’ Bill Willingham.

Sorry, the miniblog thingie can’t process that link and adds a funky character in the middle…
Previously on Froggie’s Pull List:- April 30, Hercules & Caliber
- April 30, ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction
- May 1, Hellblazer & Black Panther
- May 5, Sparks
Froggie's Pull List: Sparks
The first time Sparks showed up on the newly solicited stuff, I found this idea of “superhero noir” quite intriguing, but I wasn’t really sold to the series from Catastrophic Comics.
I just added it to my pull list after reading this glowing advance review from the guys at Comics and… other imaginary tales.
You can also take a look at a preview from issue #1 over at the Catastrophic Comics website.
Sparks #1 should ship on June 25.

- April 30, ZMD: Zombies of Mass Destruction
- May 1, Hellblazer & Black Panther
The cover of Sparks caught my eye (even though I try not to judge stuff by the cover) though I’m undecided on whether “superhero noir” is for me… let us know what you think of it when it ships!
I’m going into this one with a two issue plan. JM Ringuet, the artist for it (and for Transhuman btw) has left a comment that the second issue kicks things off in a big way. Sure, he might be biased, but that’s the plan for now. Wow me in two issues… :)
Froggie's Pull List: Hellblazer & Black Panther
Yeah, yeah, I said lesser known stuff, well I lied. :p
Jason Aaron will be writing a couple of issues of Hellblazer soon (June’s #245 & July’s #246) and little did I know, he’s only the second American to tackle the stories of John Constantine.
I learned that in this interview with Aaron on CBR in which he also talks about his upcoming three issue Secret Invasion tie in story arc that he will do in Black Panther (starting with issue #39).
Grrr, can’t get the link to work… you can copy/paste this link in another window until the bug is resolved:

Froggie's Pull List: Hercules & Caliber
I’ve been pimping their work a bit on the HI forum this week, and I’ve not even read their offerings, but Radical Publishing seems to have put out a couple of nice ones for only a buck a piece.
Hercules #1 and Caliber #1 are both set to ship this week, almost a month ahead of schedule and already I see plenty of positive reviews.

Froggie's Pull List: an idea...
I subscribe to a ton and a half of comic blogs, as I would think many of you do too. I don’t read them all, although I glance over most of the headlines and sometimes I come accross some posts that I find interesting about stuff I have on my pull list. My wife doesn’t care much about my comic addiction, so here’s the idea I had. Whenever I see something on my google reader rounds, I will report the links in here.
Might be about anything, but hopefully, I’ll find stuff about some of the lesser known titles from my pull list, which has grown to a an out of control size lately. Sure, I’m pretty big into the usual Marvel stuff, but if you take a look at said pull list, you’ll find some stuff that I’m sure some people just don’t know about (or so I like to tell myself, heh).
Why not do a review myself you may ask. Because I’m not good enough to do so, and besides, other people are doing it and often, I simply agree to what they are writing anyway, so why reinvent the wheel. :)
I might link to reviews, author interviews, or maybe even previews. Anything I find interesting and that I think might let people learn about cool new stuff they would not know about otherwise…
Also, by linking to blog posts all over the interwebs, one would hope that this might give some link back to HeavyInk. Gotta give back to this nice place we have here.
So, who’s with me?
See ya there and also, if you see anything you read on the stuff I link to and you feel like commenting, let’s go, let it out…
Now, what an odd surprise
Another surprise was waiting for me in the mailbox today, the real one this time. The shipment that was shipped last Thursday is here, with the Secret Invasion Infiltration trade, Ms Marvel #25 (SI tie in), and Secret Invasion #1, that I will read in that order. Weehee!!!
Add to that volume 3 of Naoki Urasawa’s Monster, Logan #2, Anna Mercury #1 and four issues of Casanova and it was an awesome shipment. I’ve got the Casanova trade on backorder and issues 8, 9, 12, and 13 were in that shipment. I’ll wait for the trade (collecting issues 1 to 7) to show up before I start reading any of it though. Only read positive things about it so it won’t get here soon enough… I’ll read Monster while waiting. :)
Reason why I called this an odd surprise is that for such a big shipment to only take a week is quite fast. Even weirder, I have issue #106 of Daredevil that supposedly was shipped all by itself in one enveloppe on Monday of last week and it’s still not here. Hopefully it’s not lost and shredded somewhere. :( Fringers crossed for now…
EDIT: that Daredevil issue showed up in the mail the day after that big envelope, or a full week and 4 fays after it was shipped. So much for smaller envelopes travelling faster in the mail, heh…
What a nice surprise!
Look what email just showed up in my inbox:
“HeavyInk shipment status for shipment #5243”
What? Wow, how nice. I wasn’t really complaining about the Friday shipment but was frankly happy when I saw the shipping notices come in on Thursdays for the last couple of weeks.
Now on Wednesday?!? I’m ecstatic!!! Way to go guys, well done again!
Indeed, my comics are here, and HeavyInk delivers!
Big changes for Iron Fist
It was announced today that the team of writers Matt Fraction and Ed Brubaker as well as artist David Aja will be leaving Immortal Iron Fist after issue #16.
That took me, and I guess many others by surprise. Learning it via marvel.com by reading about the new writer first kind of softened the blow I guess, as opposed to simply reading that Fraction and Brubacker would be leaving, without a name for replacement. I loooooooved the Frabacker team with Aja on pencils, but I’m willing to give a chance to Duane Swierczynski as he certainly seems very much into the character that is Danny Rand. Hopefully all will be for the best and we’ll be able to enjoy many more good issues of Iron Fist…
I was definitely shocked to hear the news about Fraction, Brubaker, and Aja all leaving the book at the same time! I knew Brubaker was on his way out, but it seemed like Fraction would have stayed on the character.
I’m not familiar with the new creative team, I heard the writer is doing the Cable series(which I heard was so so but only on its 2nd issue). The most dissappointing thing though is they are reverting back to Iron Fist’s old costume!!!! I loved the new look, so bummer!
Bendis about Secret Invasion
Link to an interview with Michael Brian Bendis on G4’s Attack of the Show, interesting stuff about Secret Invasion…
Hey man, did you see the preview for Mighty Avengers 12?? ALEX MALEEV on art! Bendis and Maleev’s run on Daredevil was probably my favorite run of all time.
Are you a fan of Alex Maleev’s work at all? Have you been following Mighty Avengers at all? I can’t wait for Mighty Avengers 12, it’ll be my first Mighty Avenger book(hope it’s a good place to start.

It is a rare beginning, I think. It was also the reason why I was so far ahead of most everyone else in “reading” when I started school. Of course, that’s ALL I was ahead of them on….heh.

cool story your start with comics. :)
Welcome aboard!
Hey dude. Just realized I don’t think I’ve ever “blurbed” you. :) Wanted to say I appreciate your posts and your blog entries. I enjoy reading about the titles you are trying out. I usually try to stay away from reading CBR because I got tired of the spoilers. I started out there though before HI came along. Anyway, you save me the trouble of going there! :) Thanks.
I’m in Ontario, two hours from Toronto.

hey, fellow Canuck, which part of the Great White North are you in? I live nearby Quebec City…
Hey, I was thinking about checking out a few more Vertigo titles than I am currently and was going to give Young Liars a go. How has it been so far?
Any other vertigo books to try?
Thanks for the link for DCU #0 by the way!
Heh. Yeah my master says to not use chairs any more and just do the horse stance all the time. And yes, Taichi and Kungfu are all about being rounded and relaxed all the time. The way I’m learning it, taichi is just kungfu slowed way down, so you can master the details of every movement. I tried Karate once, and didn’t like it, but that was because the teacher was more interested in showing off his weapons than anything else. What makes Kenpo Karate different from normal Karate?
FrogMan said:
Just recently received my Shodan (black belt) in Kenpo Karate. Been practicing it for five years now.
Did an hour or so of kungfu at a seminar back in early March. It kicked my ass with its freaking low horse stance, but it was very cool. So different in movements from what I’m used to though, much rounder, if you know what I mean. Taichi, I know very little about.
You bet. I see you also do martial arts. What kind? I’ve recently taken up kungfu and taichi.

Hey, are you planning on picking up DC’s Final Crisis? I’m not a fan of Grant Morrison’s rhaz al Ghul crossover, but man this book is getting so much hype!
Hey, by the way, have you read any of the Sin City trades? I was thinking about picking a few up, but the “library” collection is out of stock, and I wonder how good the quality is on the 2nd printing stuff.
Knew about the prologue, but not the Saga Issue. Thanks.
FrogMan said:
yay, another Marvel fan!!! Marvels rocks! You probably already knew about it anyway, but Marvel have made the Secret Invasion Prologue issue and the Secret Invasion Saga issue available online. See my mini blog posts for more information and links.
What would you say you’ve been enjoying the most from your pull so far(your “top of the stack” so to speak)? Maleev’s work on Daredevil, with Brian Bendis writing I thought, was amazing! I ended up picking up the hardcovers liking it so much, so I can’t wait for Maleev to be back on Daredevil(even if its a cameo or whatnot). Btw I read my friends copy of SI #1 great stuff, can’t wait to see where it goes!
All fixed, sorry! I had it set for only friends. :)

I meant, we can read snippets of your blog posts on the frontpage, but the blog isn’t showing on your profile page for some reason. Maybe you have it for friends only. That way, I read about a webcomic on the snippet, but it cuts off before I get a link. Quite a teaser… :D

I’ve enjoyed this series a great deal so far, very entertaining, even if sometimes a bit predictable in the humor used for it. The first story arc (ish 1-4) was solid and was setting the tone for a long kind of underlying story.
The only thing keeping me from giving this particular issue 5 stars is the switch in artist. Nothing really wrong about JC Grande but his drawing doesn’t appeal to me as much as the art of Marcus Harris, who’s also co-creator of the series. From what they explained Harris had to take a break for a few issues to play catch up, whatever that means. I look forward to when he’ll be back…

I’m pretty new to comics and was kinda lost in the slew of X-books. This one was a pure joy to read, with a simple one-part story that I felt already familiar with the characters, sort of, but with so much characterization possible. Looking forward to more of the same!

I got into comics just as the Civil War event started. I had no real clue what that big event was and never got into it. I really love this series as it allows me to read through the whole thing chronologically and at 3 regular size issues per $4 Chronicles issue (HeavyInk price!), it’s really good deal.

Huh. Interesting preview. I think the cover art gave me a different idea of what I thought the art would be.
I’d seen some of these pics so I wasn’t too surprised. I’d say it fits the Vertigo style, if there is such a thing…
Have you read house of Mystery #1? I thought it was a reasonable mix of creepy-type horror and want-to-figure-out-what’s-going-on puzzle, but I wasn’t blown away by it. What did you think?
