DEAD SPACE!

Wow dead space is getting a lot of attention, first the game story/comic then the animated comic and now a animated movie that is due before the game release in October. I hope it’s better then the animated comic, the voice over actors are utterly horrible.

I suggest to pick up the comic and don’t watch the animated comic on youtube.

Anyway, the game looks awesome. I’m picking it up for PS3.

Here is information about Dead Space quoted from Wikipedia.

“Dead Space is a third-person shooter video game, being developed by EA Redwood Shores for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the PC. It is currently scheduled for release in October 2008. The player takes on the role of an engineer named Isaac Clarke, who battles a polymorphous alien species called the ‘Necromorphs’ on board a stricken interstellar mining ship called the Ishimura.

Gameplay The player must fight their way through various levels of a stricken mining ship, which has been infested with an alien species known as the ‘Necromorphs’. The game features an ‘over the shoulder’ third-person perspective, similar to games such as Resident Evil 4 and Gears of War. The interface does not feature a traditional ‘heads up display’. Instead, information is relayed to the player via lights and translucent screens which hover over Isaac’s weapons and armour.

The player will encounter weightless and decompressed environments, which Isaac can navigate using a pressurized suit, dubbed The Rig by EA (revealed in Official Xbox Magazine, April 2008) equipped with magnetic boots. Some levels will even lead out onto the surface of the ships hull. Floating debris will present a hazard, and Isaac can lose his footing and simply float off into space. In keeping with Isaac’s profession as an engineer rather than a soldier, weapons in the game are mostly improvised, and consist of an array of bolt cutters, stasis guns and rudimentary energy weapons.

Synopsis The game’s plot revolves around Isaac Clarke, a space engineer who works for the Concordance Extraction Corporation (C.E.C), a company that operates “giant mining ships” throughout the galaxy. His company receives a distress call from the USG Ishimura, a “Planet Cracker” class ship that destroys planets in order to extract valuable ore. Assuming that the ship has had a mechanical failure, Isaac and two other C.E.C employees set out to rendezvous with the Isimura. They soon discover that the ship has been overrun by a hostile alien race. After boarding the ship, Clarke is separated from his party and must battle his way through various hazardous environments to safety.

Development

The title was first announced in the October 2007 Issue of Game Informer Magazine. The game is being developed on a proprietary engine developed by EA.

The developers drew inspiration from films such as Event Horizon, Alien, and The Thing, as well as videogames like the Resident Evil- and Silent Hill-series. David Fincher’s visual style was also mentioned as a source of inspiration.

Comic On February 22, 2008, Electronic Arts and Image Comics announced a new comic book series based upon the game. This new six book series set in the Dead Space universe will be written and illustrated by Ben Templesmith and written by Antony Johnston.

The Dead Space comic is the prequel story for the game. This series tells the gut-wrenching tale of a deep space mining colony that unexpectedly pulls an ancient and vicious alien life force from the dark rock which they call a marker.

The first issue will be on comic store shelves starting March 3rd for the price of $2.99 each. However, a limited edition version of issue #1 with exclusive cover art will be available at WonderCon.

The First Two Issues are now available to view for free on gametrailers On March 21, 2008, Electronic Arts and Starz announced that an animated movie would be made about Dead Space. The movie, being developed by Film Roman, is expected to be released before the game comes out on Halloween.”

Hi Wolfy, thanks for the tip on Northlanders. I definitely want to read the first issues. Have you enjoyed it?

By the way, saw a post you made about Arkham Asylum, decided to check it out, I’ve only gotten through the first issue so far, wow it’s pretty nuts…I love the backstory with the asylum though.

Dude, I just picked up the first trade of Wormwood, holy crap I definitely think this series is Templesmith’s best its Pure BADASS!!

PS3 nick is geekspeedracer. DMZ is great. I’ve been reading since #1.

yeah, I’ve meant to pick up the first trade I think from the first week I’ve been on HeavyInk. Read the first issue on imagecomics.com and liked it a lot but then it became unavailable on HI. Bummer. Might have to get it from indigo.ca (nice place for trades for Canadian customers btw)...

cool. Quebec can be a really cool city if you want to feel as if you’re visiting Europe without flying that far away. :) The Old Quebec area is highly recommended and this Summer, there are all sorts of special festivities for the 400th anniversary of the foundation of the city…

Blade runner is by far my favorite Sci-Fi movie. Logan’s Run is a classic. Other classics of some significance that go further back are “Forbidden Planet” and “Robinson Crusoe on Mars”. The genre is replete with greats. But, Ridley Scotts stab at perfection on Blade Runner is amazing… and the movie diverges quite a bit from Philip K. Dick’s book (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep). My favorite line from the movie was actually written by Rutger Hauer (Batty): “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.” Sublime. And, the naming of Tannhäuser gate is choke full of historical reference. He was poet, Wagner wrote an opera something like Tannhäuser and Venus”. Again, can’t say enough about this movie. Then, it’s a very short hop to Philip K. Dick, one of my very favorite Sci-Fi authors… More of his work should be adapted to comics… Why not? Heh, heh. Go read a Scanner Darkly, the book is brilliant.

Gotta run.

Hooaaa! That was a cool show. Great fan-base. If I could sit folks down for 3 or 4 episodes, I could get them hooked. But, most of my friends just didn’t seem to get the show… “That show was weird”. Whaddayagonnado? Then the get into something like Stargate SG-1… The most non-sci-fi Sci-Fi program on TV… Maybe it me that’s weird.

hey Wolfy, thanks for the Terminator omnibus recommendation. Yeah, I subscribed to it mainly to pick the two issues that were part of the Painkiller crossover Jane but I ended up liking it. Was intrigued by the Omnibus books but had not clue what they really were about. I might want to check them out at some point.

I see, you’re from the great white north, whereabout? I live nearby Quebec City. I’m French Canadian first (hence the FrogMan nick, might as well make fun of it myself, heh ;) ) although I try to simply have a Canadian accent and not a French Canadian one. blech… :D

FoC is my favorite book right now. It’s different from Tales b/c it has ongoing storylines. It’s consistently creepy and well written…You could probably jump in whenever, but some threads have been set up since the start. And the book itself is about to change over to God War. If anything, you should snag a copy of The Fugue, which is the first collected volume. Great stuff that would make any Lovecraft fan happy. I couldn’t put the book down!

What a controversial cliffhanger ending! I hope there will be an issue number 4. The covers, inking, story and even the paper are all SWEEEEEET. This is a must read.
