Picking up where it left off in Ultimate Enemy we readers are given Ultimate Mystery. The funny thing is that there were more elements of mystery in the first tale. This is sort of the interlude between the first and third book.
It reintroduces nova and captain marvel both of which are underused character whose reimagining is wonderful.
The tale also gives spider woman some much needed spotlight. Though her tale seems rather insignifcant in comparison with the actual story. spoiler She investigates then gets caught before she can find anything out; big whoop. Perhaps this tale will be flushed out more in the next book.
Alright I’ll admit it now; even though I’m a huge marvel fan I have always hated the fantastic four.
The surprising thing is that this story seems to be recreating the team dynamic and its Good! There’s betrayal, abuse, anger and confusion. Its stellar.
The downside is that these issues seem to be a wind down from the first book. The only real significant issue is the last one #4. Its here where it answers a few questions and buids some serious back story for the final book. The rest is just confusing filler.
If you liked Enemy then you’ll probably like Mystery. I found Enemy to be a completely confusing mess of a story. Mystery is still a mess but not a wreck and manages to redeem itself with the final issue which sets up the story for Doom.
It seems safe to say that Doom is the heart of this trilogy. Since everything leads into it and even though there’s dialogue and short unexplained occurences little of it seems to matter when it comes to Doom. I guess we’ll see when doom comes out.
It may also be because the only shocking moment of the series so far is the end of issue three where it reveals the true villain (though the goop monster sort of hints at it from the start (see ultimate power)) and you’ll probably suspect who the villain is a bit before issue 3 as well. Regardless it will still be a good twist.
Not a fan of a 12 issue limited series promoting itself as 3 limited series but so far the story is decent and I look forward to the next part.
