Now this, people, is a comic. I loved this comic when it was out 10 or so years ago (at least for the first 20 issues), and this is a great return. I just finished reading the first issue, and man I was impressed.
This series is Great! Though it suffers one major flaw: Crossover Fatigue.
The first story line is five issues and is a terrific introduction to the series. Previously I had no idea who the New Mutants were but this was very “new reader friendly”.
The second story right off the bat is the Necrosha crossover tie in. Usually that is a bad sign in regards to a comic series: bad sales or lack of ideas (ideas didn’t really seem to be an issue).
Then its a two issue story returning back to the core series rather than a crossover. This story is good and it reveals a lot about the purpose of the team and the series as a whole.
The sad part is that immediately after that short story we get hit with another crossover. SIEGE! and really it doesn’t do much other than tie up a loose end in the Utopia Crossover (which is not in this series).
Then immediately after a tie in issue we get a legitimate cross over (no tie in bull@#$%). I loved this crossover but it doesn’t really contribute to the New Mutants series.
So finally, after crossover after crossover after crossover, it returns to a promising full length story that does not rely on x-overs.
The story as of issue 18 is also a great read comparable to the first story of the serie and more so. It draws off of the 80s story inferno (which I didn’t read and again the author takes that into account and makes it friendly to new readers). That was just the icing on the cake. The real good aspect is that ontop of developing the story it is built off of forshadowing elements hinted at in all the non crossover issues.
I was worried for a while but now I’m not. As long as this series can avoid being apart of a crossover it should be one of the best X-Men series out this decade.
I forgot to mention that a majority of the many plot lines involving the character Magik have been developed prior to this series starting.
X-Infernus is considered the prelude to this series.
However the tale really starts towards the end of the New X-Men series. It is titled Quest for Magik (issues 37-41).
So reading order would be Quest for Magik, X-Infernus, then this series.
Arguably it could be said that this story starts with the whole Magik getting stuck in limbo thing (inferno?) but those details are not stressed as necessary information.
