I love all aspects of comics, especially the art of sequential storytelling. I have been collecting comics for a while now and I am constantly amazed by the talented people who are attracted to the medium.

I am the writer and artist on a comic book series “Robotika” from Archaia Studios Press. The first mini series was released last year and is now collected in a trade. The second series “Robotika: For few Rubles More” is currently being published.

You can see my artwork at my Website and you can see samples of Robotika at ASP Robotika Page.

I also have a Blog on which I talk about how I approach creating a series…and some other stuff that comes up :)

Beetle says:

Alex, I was visiting Seattle and stopped by Xanadu downtown. An employee was talking about “Killer” via Archaia and I asked if he’d read “Few Rubles More” published by same and this dude flipped out saying he LOVED your work and that “Mouse Guard” short was awesome, too. Totally random, but very cool!

Beetle says:

Received and read “For A Few Rubles More” 3&4 combo, Alex. Great stuff! All the fighting was badass, and that 3-level layout through #4 was neat-O. Awesome job!

Matthew says:

Hey Alex, I did get your book I just haven’t had time to sit down and give it a god read. I did page through it and loved the art. Plus I liked your format for a recap on the inside cover. I’m hoping to get to it before the end of the week. I was at Wiz Philly last weekend and I am trying to catch up. I will also get Venger out to you as well.

Matthew says:

Sure I would love too. Thanks for the interest. Just let me know what the address is and I’ll send it your way. Mine is… Matt Spatola 208 South Barbara Street Mount Joy PA 17552

Alex Sheikman said:

Matthew, I would be very interested in getting a copy of your book. Would you be interested in trading copies (I’ll send you a copy of Robotika)? Just let me know :) Alex-

FrogMan says:

Finished reading the Robotika hardcover last night and thought it was very good. Yeah, a bit spacey and out there, but very good. Probably the best compliment is that it made me want to read more. There, you have succeeded. ;)

I must admit I’m a sucker for everything samurai. :)

Beetle says:

Doh! I misread that last blurb. Done! Err… I THINK I put it in the right place. ;)

Alex Sheikman said:

Beetle,

Anyway I can talk you into posting your review of the Robotika hardcover in the “customer review” section for the solicitation of the second print? It might temp some folks to check it out.

Beetle says:

DEFINITELY. Go for it, and I’d be honored. Sorry for the late reply—but the blurb reply thing was buggy for a bit.

FrogMan says:

forget that last question, it’ll be irrelevant as I went looking for it and found it oh so cheap on amazon.ca marketplace. ORDERED! :)

Me loves samurai story, will let you know what I think when I read it.

FrogMan says:

speaking of which, is the first mini absolutely necessary to follow what’s coming in the new issues?

I’ll probably pick it up at some point, but I got tons of stuff in my to read pile at the moment. :)

Alex Sheikman said:

Very cool! Thank you for the kind words and I look forward to hearing what you think :)

FrogMan says:

hey Alex, just thought you’d like to know that shipper Andy was kind enough to include a Robotika card in my shipment I received last week. It’s postcard size but with pictures on both size, pictures I assume are the covers of issues #1 and #2 based off what I can see on HI. It’s quite awesome and has now become my official bookmark for when I’m reading a trade. :)

Pete says:

Hi Alex, tweaked! (Sorry for any delay, I’ve been out a lot lately, going through the contact us page is better for this stuff because someone is always reading that…)

Alex Sheikman said:

Hi Pete,

Can you please “tweak” my shipments (sorry for selecting the wrong option originally). I would like to combine them into just one monthly shipment, no matter when they arrive. Thank you!

Dan says:

Here it is...

Dan says:

No, never did – haven’t seen much of The Dude’s big two superhero work, either… just that two-issue World’s Finest from a while back, I think. Have you seen that scathing critique Alex Toth delivered to him (by request)? It’s really really something – educational in the extreme.

Alex Sheikman said:

I just read you comment about the Nexus books being ready for solicitation in May. Great news! I just got Nexus #99 and #100. It has been such a long time since I read any Nexus, I am going back and re-reading Nexus:Nightmare in Blue before I read the new issues. I have actually been on a Steve Rude kick for the last month or so. I got his Captain America mini (excellent), Spiderman (excellent), Children of the Atom (also excellent), Thor (excellent), and his giant size Legends of DCU #14 (most excellent). I am also thinking about buying his recent “Artist in Motion” art book. Did you ever look through it?

Trogg says:

I actually did find a great school. I appreciate your answer nonetheless because you just have raw talent and have probably been perfecting your skills as I have to. Thanks again sir!

Alex Sheikman said:

Sorry, but I won’t be much help. I did not attend any art schools or taken any art classes…I just draw a lot because I enjoy it :) I would surf around the web and see what schools are talked-up on the animation sites. I would imagine that now-a-days there is a computer animation department at any junior or 4 year college. Let me know what you find out and good luck!

Trogg says:

I don’t know if you have any kind of degree pertaining to art (you could just be naturally talented in the art department) but I have been trying to find schools with good animation programs. I was wondering if you could recommend any schools or at least tell what school you attended/degree you received. Whatever your response I am sure it will shed at least a little light on my situation.

Dan says:

Alex, check this, this & this. Kinda cool.

Dan says:

Yeah – I’d love to, provided that you don’t need it immediately, and that I can come up with something worthy… ;-)

Alex Sheikman said:

Dan, If you are willing to flex your “graphic design muscles” for the fun of it, I would like to talk to you about re-designing the Robotika logo…any interest? Alex-

Trogg says:

Hey, I just wanted to tell you I really enjoyed your “Something Wicked This Way Comes” inking. I love ink artwork and your piece really inspired me to actually try it out for once, so thanks for the courage and inspiration. Keep up the awesome work!

Andy says:

Hi Alex. Diamond somehow flushed our solicitation for Moon knight 26. I’ve been trying to reorder it, but so far no dice. I’m sorry for the confusion… they don’t know when/if they’ll be shipping any more.

Alex Sheikman said:

Andy, Did you ever get the chance to figure out what the deal with Moon Knight 26 is?

Andy says:

Hi Alex… I spoke with our Diamond rep yesterday, it’s a shipping mixup on their part. We didn’t receive it this week, but it should be in soon. Sorry for the delay!

Alex Sheikman said:

Andy, Did you ever get the chance to figure out what the deal with Moon Knight 26 is?

Dan says:

OK, so it turns out Diamond won’t have any more MM Warlock vol 2s until June… so, we’re both stuck waitin’.

Dan says:

Re: Warlock – I actually haven’t got it yet. I want vol 2 (the starlin stuff), and it doesn’t seem to be available… I’ll check with Andy about it today. I did get the Starlin Captain Marvel book, though – the quality (including color) is excellent. It’s from the same era, I assume the Warlock book will be as good. I’ll order asap and confirm.

Dan says:

Alex, I just noticed your blurb over at long-gone intern Brian’s account, and thought I’d point you to another place he’s got some art posted:

Jason Copland says:

Hey Alex! I’m good. Busy, but good! I’ve got your sketchbook all ready to go. I think you’ll get a smile from it. Hope you’re doing well, too.

Alex Sheikman said:

Jason,

How have you been, Just wanted to drop you a line and seehow you are doing :)

Alex-

daynah says:

I sure as heck hope so (in regards to people always wanting bright eyed bushy tailed graduates).

Dan says:

Bleargh. Didn’t get to the con. Oh well.

Dan says:

BTW, if you don’t check that site regularly, you should – it’s a treasure-trove, with more great stuff added all the time!

Alex Sheikman said:

Dan, great Berni Wrightson story! And an awesome surprise in the form of a Ralph Reese story…that is simply excellent. All just in time for the Frankenstein reprint (I think I now have 2 copies of it, paperback from when Marvel published it, a hardcover from a few years ago when Underwood reprinted it…and now I am thinking of buying this one as well if the reproductions are good).

Dan says:

so, someone ordered one and apparently cancelled their order, so I’m holding it in my hands now. It looks pretty good (though I’ve never seen any other editions to compare it to) – it’s about an inch thick, has a black cloth cover, and has very nice paper – I can’t really believe they’re only charging $24 for it… unless I’m looking at the wrong entry? Anyway, Wrightson will apparently be at the Boston con this weekend, so I think I’ll bring it down and try to get it signed…

Some Bernie Wrightson for ya!

Jason Copland says:

LOVE the new 24 hour comic picture, Alex!

Ken says:

I signed up for deliveries every 4 weeks and it has been about 28 days since I did so I am about to send an e-mail to see when they plan to ship me (a very large number) my comics. Got the book “Artesia” yesterday and will read it this weekend—In between mowing the lawn, painting the porch and doing my final exam in Managerial Accounting.

Alex Sheikman said:

Hi Ken, I think we were talking a while back about “Wolverine – Saudade” ...did you ever get a chance to read it? Just wondering if you enjoyed it.

Ken says:

Actually I didn’ realize that Corbin was still doing anything (I was on a hiatus during the 90s and early 00s) until I saw an issue of Hulk he did. I have most Heavy Metal issues with his work and even picked up a signed and numbered hard back copy of Howard’s Bloodstar by Corbin. Typing in these little boxes is awkward—and why does part of my text get lined out?? As a young child in the mid 60s I picked up a comic illustrated paperback full of short scifi stories by Wallace Wood. I devoured it and have it still. Man, they were/are great! Can’t find it’s equal today. Sigh.

Ken says:

Just purchsed Artesia and will get in a few days. HI has not shipped me Wolverine Saudade yet. Looking forward to a lrge shipment soon. Strangly, I am enjoying the “Old man Wolverine” twist in the regular title-but who knows what will catch my fancy. I really enjoy good comic art. I grew up with Wallace Wood and Bernie Wrightson and Oh! Richard Corbin-The sicko—I loved his stuf. I’ll let you know how I like Artesia.

Alex Sheikman said:

If you do pick-up Artesia do let me know how you like it…I did not know what to expect, but I really enojoyed it.

What did you think of “Wolverine Saudade”? I thought the art was wonderful and I enjoyed reading a Wolverine story that was had a different twist to it.

Ken says:

Thanks. I’ll check it out. After reading 3 or 4 LOR wannabees in the late 80s I quit fantasy (at least the sword & sorcery) for years until a friend tipped me to GRRM and I devoured the books (even managed to get a signed first edition for my library. So I look forward to recommended books now. Oh and how about Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars trilogy in comic format? Epic and done right for years of enjoyment. Dreaming again.

Alex Sheikman said:

If you have enjoyed the “Game of Thrones” you might enjoy Mark Smylie’s “Artesia”. Intrigue, magic, and battles…all drawn in a beautiful painterly style.

Ken says:

Your points are valid. I would also note that “hard” scifi may not have the reader support or it might have to be dumbed down. Doesn’t stop me from wanting to see it though… I am enjoying Dresden Files and Wild Cards. Even enjoyed Hedge Knight (but would really like to see the entire Game of Thrones. One can dream.

Alex Sheikman said:

I agree that the epic sci-fi is not something that is done in comics very often…it might be because of the medium itself. Some of the books that you mentioned would be very hard to adapt into comics because of the illustration challenges. I mean just a few lines from any of those could turn into half an issue worth of “world building”/establishing settings. I do think there were some real decent series last few years that tried, like “Reign of the Zodiac”, “Human Defense Corps”, “Hammerlocke”...

Ken says:

Strangely enough I did buy the first couple of issues (mainly because it was Jim Starlin) but never read them-have them packed away somewhere. I guess I’m not talking about mainstream scifi. How about Breg Bear’s “Forge of God” or David Brin’s Uplift series or Niven’s “Jesus Incident” or “Legacy of Heorot”, or Aldiss’ Helliconia series and on and on… Looking forward to King’s “The Stand” being done-hope I’m not disapointed.

Alex Sheikman said:

Did you ever read any of the “StarReach” comics? They wre being published in the late 70’s and had lots of great sci-fi short stories by some great artists/writers. That was also the place that “Sacred and Profane” first got serialized.

Jason Copland says:

Thanks, Alex! I’ll have more Perhapanuts news on Friday!

Alex Sheikman said:

Jason, Great Perhapanauts pin-up!

Beetle says:

w00t, just read “Robotika” HC last night. I’ll try and get a review up shortly!

Hi Alex. Just wanted to say a belated welcome and thanks for all your posts thus far. I appreciate your input on different comics that I may not have read yet. You’ve been a great addition to the community. Thanks, again!

Jason Copland says:

Alex! Nice to see you, sir!

Leif Jones says:

Hey Alex! I’m glad to see you promoting yourself and buying comics at the same time. I told you Heavy Ink was pretty cool! It’s good to see you here.
