Lately I’ve been reading Unknown Soldier (gritty, not usually my thing, but the writing is really good), The Unwritten (Series is just starting up, but seems like a good story so far) and Four Eyes (has been coming out infrequently, but the art and story have both been great).

Pete,
I do not want to sound like an unhappy camper because I am very happy with HI. The website is great and so is the service. I know that not all comics can show up perfect.
I just remember reading something about collectable and reader copies of comics. I think it may have been in the how it works section.
Thanks,
Troy

reply
Troy says:

Pete,
Hate to bother you but have the BN Titans and Superman variants already come out?

- also is there an area on this site
where one can choose collectable copies of comics? I only ask this because the copy of Chew 3 I received today had creases and what seems to be moisture damage to the cover. A majority of the comics I have received have been near perfect though.
Thanks
Troy

reply
Troy says:

Pete,The cover fights have different cover #s listed beside the the issues. Are these variants? If I choose to buy a certain issue when it is placed in my cart the cover # does not show up. For example you have an Amazing Spiderman #608 cover #1 and #2. When I place them in my cart it just says Amazing-Spiderman #608.
Thanks for the help.

After the initial press release was sent out, we were contacted by Rob Liefeld and informed that he has an optioned character named Galaxy Girl. If there are two title characters with the same name, Rob wouldn’t be able to make a comic, and I wouldn’t be able to sell to movies or TV. Hence, the name change.

Why did “I Hate Galaxy Girl” get changed to “I Hate Gallant Girl”?

re:videos… thanks. We both worked really to get those forms and it’s amazing how my son has grown with it. It’s not real traditional stuff, but we loved training together for it and I think it made us better with our karate through it.

Re: bo… yeah, it’s still made of wood though. It’s only covered with a shiny plastic taping to make it flashier while doing the open type form. It’s all for show. :) No way I’d spin and throw my bo around like that in a real fight. :)

Pete said:

Re: Bo… Ah, I’ve only ever seen wooden ones, I didn’t realize different materials were being used.

Re: videos… Wow, excellent, very impressive! Especially your son, quite accomplished for such a young age.

Pat1337 says:

Hey, thanks man! I’ll definitely give it a go for a semester. I’m not sure how far you were able to advance but some of the sparring/belt tests up on youtube looks killer.

I read up a bit on Aikido and I really respect the passive/non-aggressive philosophy of it.

I saw that you are checking out Unknown Soldier, the comcept/back story of the book sounds pretty damn cool. I’d love to hear what you think of it!

Pete said:

Hey Pat, Saw your Aikido related blurb to FrogMan… I studied Aikido for a short time, and loved it (needed to stop because of an unrelated shoulder injury, never restarted, should…). It’s probably not the martial art most strongly focused on pure self-defense, but it’s great for a mix of that with just generally developing great total-body physical skills. Definitely try it if you get the chance.

reply view context
FrogMan says:

Thanks! while I never did martial arts for any kind of trophies, I’m quite proud of them. Much prouder of the simple fact I achieved Shodan, if you know what I mean, but the competitions forced me to deal with the pressure and to work on my forms intensively. I’m sure it paid off in the grand scheme of things.

The two long shiny sticks we’re holding are called a bo, or long staff. It’s a weapon with which we do a form, or kata. While ours are all shiny and very light, the bo used to be a traditional weapon in Japan, but theirs were sturdier and heavier. The bo is also TMNT’s Donatello’s weapon of choice. ;)

fwiw, you the forms we performed that day in this little youtube video

Let me know what you think :)

Pete said:

Oh, hey, and congrats on your trophies! What are you and your son holding with your right arms?

about EMfM, that’s cool. You sure did get my interest up and made me check other reviews for it. I think I will definitely want to check the trade when it’s collected…

Pete said:

Gah! I was nearly certain you were subscribed to RMfM, should have checked before asking….

reply view context
FrogMan says:

gah, you are teasing me here, this is not nice! :p

I didn’t have RMfM on my pull list and now I’m seriously thinking about it. I wavered about getting it or not, the superhero side of things might make me want to get it even more now. I do like superhero things. :)

Pete said:

Oh, and did you read Red Mass for Mars #1? If so, what did you think, after the long wait? I thought it was pretty good, despite more of a superhero angle than I was expecting…

FrogMan says:

re: HoM#2, hrm, from the solicit text for #5 out on Comics Continuum:

Part 5 of “Room and Boredom.” In the extremely destructive conclusion to the first story arc, Fig Keele has literally brought down the House, but couldn’t she have waited until everyone got out alive first?

a five part arc, might be tempted to let it go the way and then kick it, then I might kick it after next issue. We’ll see…

Pete said:

Re: House of Mystery #2, I’m with you on the substories, though I though this one was a bit better than the first one. I think I’ll give it one more go and then drop it if it doesn’t kick it up a notch…

reply view context
FrogMan says:

hey Pete, have you had a chance to read House of Mystery #2?

Just read it and I’m torn about it. I wanna know what’s going to happen with the lady in the main story, who’s the voice and all that, but the story within the story, well, I thought it was frankly quite boring… I’ll ponder a bit…

ohwowitsbecca says:

Pete, random thing that just occurred to me… When I see your avatar out of the corner of my eye (such as when I’m reading your posts), it looks a lot like the Jesus Mii on my Wii. And it too me a really long time to figure out what was so familiar about it, because when viewing it directly, it doesn’t look like that at all.

Just thought I’d share.

FrogMan says:

first thoughts about House of Mystery #1, repost from my mini-blog:

Just finished reading it and I’m left feeling a bit, “huh?”. Had not really realized it will be set as two parters like that and I’m not so sure I like that. I guess I’ll see in the next issue or two if I want to stay with it or not but for now it’s not off to a “I need a new issue RIGHT NOW” kind of start.

Hi Pete, just a quick question on my re-subscribing to comics here at HeavyInk… There are quite a few back issues that I’m getting. How will that work? Will they ship relatively soon if they are in stock? I was hoping that would be the case so that I can get caught up on the titles.

Ugm. Every time I’m on heavyink, it’s while I’m at work, at school, on ancient versions of browsers. So all websites, including heavyink, do really crazy things. With the photo, it was making it a square. But not all the time. Only when the stars aligned juuust right.

reply
daynah says:

It had a lot more to it than I wrote. Like weird stuff… I always wore like a 50’s perfect housewife dress and an apron with a heart top and a lace trim.. .even though it was moden day. I dusted the comics with a feather duster. I had a ladder hanging from the wall that had a sign on it that said, “Only for cute comic book store owners.” And I wore super red lipstick. That was what woke me up, ‘cause I don’t wear red lipstick. Aah, fun dreams.

Pete said:

Nice to have more comic book stories, even in dream form.

> when kids came in they all had good parents

I could have believed the rest of it, but this part is clearly dream territory…

Hey Pete, I started two threads entitled: IAM A WRITER, and I AM AN ARTIST..I don’t imagine they’ll be filling up until more people discover this wonderful site, but if you want, you could put them both in their own forum or whatever. I don’t really know where we’re gonna go with …but it seems like a cool way to maybe hook some creators up together.
