Found in the woods
I walk in the woods every day with my dog Luna, we found this yesterday:

Atomic Robo HeavyInk Exclusive
A new volume of Atomic Robo is about to begin… and it’s looking pretty sweet! I know exactly how sweet, because I’ve got a copy right here in my hands… we just got our shipment of the HeavyInk exclusive variant cover of Atomic Robo Dogs of War Part 1! Want one?
Cool! Because everyone who gets a copy of the regular issue through HeavyInk will get a copy of the variant cover for free. Get yours!
Will it come with a subscription? Or do I have to change the options of “Send alternet covers” to yes?
Yup, we’ll just send it to everyone who gets the regular copy, whether it’s a subscription or an individual order.
Well this is a very welcome surprise! But I guess now I’ll have to order another copy of the rest of the series just so I can give the whole set away!
Awesome, I just ordered a copy, but I didn’t see the variant listed in my invoice. Will I still get it?Thanks!
Yup, we’re not putting the variant covers on invoices or in order histories, we’re just dropping them in the outgoing mailers.
Robo rules! It is consistently entertaining, high-quality, and most importantly fun! Not to mention accessible to a wide fan base (men, women, most kids above age 8.)
You learn a little bit about history, have your ears and eyes tickled by the talented team who pour thier hearts into every issue and obviously love what they do. This can’t be said for many comics and their creators. We’ve all seen the derivative crap that passes for comics on the shelves at our local comic shop. How refreshing that one comes along that takes us back to the pure joy of adventures reminiscent of Indiana Jones and other blockbusters with a soul from our youth.
I hope this book has a long, healthy and consistently awesome run. I have faith in the creators of this superior series and will be one of the first in line for Atomic Robo: The Movie. I want Robo action figures, lunch boxes, bed sheets and Underoos! Hell yeah I’d wear ‘em at age 38 and proudly too! No snickering allowed. Bring ‘em on and long live Atomic Robo! P.S. Robo #1 Vol. 2 kicks all kinds of ass and is even better than what preceded it (hard to believe it but it’s true.) Order a copy for yourself, girlfriend, dog and mother-in-law.
Who likes what you like?
We just rolled out a little feature: on your profile page, you can see a list of other people on the site who have similar taste in subscriptions to yourself. Maybe they’re people you already interact with, maybe not. When I find someone who likes the same stuff I do, I always like to see what they’re reading that I haven’t checked out yet… hopefully you’ll find this useful too!
This is just a little update to your profile page, which hasn’t changed much recently… Tyler and Dan are working on something much, much bigger!
In my shed

Apologies if you don’t like spiders…
So, that's why our servers are toasty warm!
We’ve now built two websites using Ruby on Rails: SmartFlix.com, and some kind of online comic store thing. According to at least one source, both sites are among the 100 most popular sites built with rails:
http://rails100.pbwiki.com/Compete+Rankings
That’s a little surprising, but nice to see… thanks, everyone!
Graphic Novel Availability
For quite some time we’ve had an odd glitch with our graphic novel listings: fairly recent items would become unavailable, about a month after they were first listed on our site. This happened because we try to be very good about only listing items as available if we’re pretty confident about their actual availability, and we didn’t have a good information on that. Now… we do! You’ll find a bunch of fairly recent stuff available again, like
Hey guys, I’m really interested in buying the Buzzboy, Sidekicks Rule TPB, and Y’all show it as being available. But I checked with my LCBS and they said that it got cancelled. Can you check to see if it really is available or not? Thanks!!
Tying things together
We have a nice community of people who love comics, and we have lots of web pages dedicated to comics, and one of our goals it to tie these together in useful ways. As a tiny step in that direction, on any page dedicated to a comic title you can now see the people who are subscribed to that comic who have elected to make their profile and subscription list public. Just playing around and testing it, it’s been a nice way to find people who’re reading the stuff I also read.
one could think you are simply too humble by stating again that this is only a “tiny” step. I’m starting to believe it shows how big you think this little HeavyInk thing can become. Nice vision man, I appreciate the hard work, keep it up!
Mini-feature
Very useful for me, maybe useful for you… if you have a Diamond Code (this is the code that our primary distributor Diamond Comics uses to refer to comics, graphic novels, etc and looks something like APR084084), you can drop it in the search box and, if it’s in our system, we’ll return the item it’s attached to.
Is there any other kind of data you wish you could search on?
I’ve wanted to comment on this for a while now because I had a request. First, searching with the Diamond code is pretty cool, and I know it’ll serve me at one point in the future. The one tiny thing I have wanted to be able to do in regards to searches on HI is to be able to “turn off” the intelligent search. You know how it’s trying to find words that are similar to what you typed. I took so long before commenting here because I was trying to find that one example where I typed on very specific word and ended up having to sift through quite a few pages of wrong results. Not sure I’m clear enough. Let me know if you need more explanation…
Yup, I know what you’re saying. In theory, the closest matches should be up top (ie if a word in the title matches, that’s weighted more than a word in the description; also, if a word is an exact match that should be ranked higher as well). Improving search is on our list of things we want to do… if you remember the specific term, or find any others where search sucks, they’d be great to have as test cases when we’re trying to improve.
Improvements
Two recent improvements should smooth out some wrinkles:
1. There used to be an problem when we were shipping comics where we’d print out your invoices, start packing stuff up, but you could still click “cancel” on an issue. Of course, by that point the cancel wouldn’t have the expected result, ‘cause the comics were as good as shipped. That’s been fixed up, there’s a new status that reads “shipping”, and these items can no longer be cancelled. Of course, you can still cancel right up to the moment that we press the “print invoices” button.
2. We’ve been running short on some popular comics. This has happened most with series that start off with luke warm reception, but then get more popular. We’ve made some tweaks so that we’re more aggressive about ordering during certain parts of a comic’s life cycle. We have all sorts of cool stuff planned to help us get better at predicting demand, but this is a start.
as always, very cool to read about you guys making the site better. Thanks for the improvements, but also for the updates! Keep up the great work!
Indeed, my comics are here. :)
Want to know what's shipping?
Finally rolling out a new feature, a page that lets you know what’s going to be shipping in the near future:
http://heavyink.com/comics/shipping_soon
You can look at all the issues that will be shipping, or just the issues that will be shipping to you (see the “Just your issues” over to the right).
This page is likely to be updated every Friday to cover the next week, though the schedule will depend on information we’re able to get from our distributor.
We’ve also got historical information, so you can travel back in time to see what’s going to ship three weeks ago. Not quite as exciting as knowing what’s going to ship three weeks from now, but maybe still useful.
I haven’t connected this page from anywhere on the site yet, just thought I’d point it out a little early for those who have been waiting patiently for features like this…
said in the forum, will say it again: sweeeet!
Seriously, very nice new feature. Keep ‘em coming.

about EMfM, that’s cool. You sure did get my interest up and made me check other reviews for it. I think I will definitely want to check the trade when it’s collected…
Pete said:
Gah! I was nearly certain you were subscribed to RMfM, should have checked before asking….
gah, you are teasing me here, this is not nice! :p
I didn’t have RMfM on my pull list and now I’m seriously thinking about it. I wavered about getting it or not, the superhero side of things might make me want to get it even more now. I do like superhero things. :)

Oh, and did you read Red Mass for Mars #1? If so, what did you think, after the long wait? I thought it was pretty good, despite more of a superhero angle than I was expecting…
Part 5 of “Room and Boredom.” In the extremely destructive conclusion to the first story arc, Fig Keele has literally brought down the House, but couldn’t she have waited until everyone got out alive first?
a five part arc, might be tempted to let it go the way and then kick it, then I might kick it after next issue. We’ll see…

Re: House of Mystery #2, I’m with you on the substories, though I though this one was a bit better than the first one. I think I’ll give it one more go and then drop it if it doesn’t kick it up a notch…
hey Pete, have you had a chance to read House of Mystery #2?
Just read it and I’m torn about it. I wanna know what’s going to happen with the lady in the main story, who’s the voice and all that, but the story within the story, well, I thought it was frankly quite boring… I’ll ponder a bit…
Jesus with a ponytail and Jesus with a haircut look very similar at first glance.
Pete said:
Gosh! I thought I had put my “looks a bit like Jesus” days behind me when I cut off my hair…
Pete, random thing that just occurred to me… When I see your avatar out of the corner of my eye (such as when I’m reading your posts), it looks a lot like the Jesus Mii on my Wii. And it too me a really long time to figure out what was so familiar about it, because when viewing it directly, it doesn’t look like that at all.
Just thought I’d share.
Would Heavy Ink be getting any more stock for Neozoic #2 soon? I just started the series (months after everyone else started) and I can’t read my #3 copy until I read #2. :)
Just finished reading it and I’m left feeling a bit, “huh?”. Had not really realized it will be set as two parters like that and I’m not so sure I like that. I guess I’ll see in the next issue or two if I want to stay with it or not but for now it’s not off to a “I need a new issue RIGHT NOW” kind of start.
Thanks for letting me know personally! I did in fact change it. :) It’s like my local comic book store is… in my bed. ...

Red Mass for Mars #3 is now available for order from our site, if you want to tweak your subscription… (didn’t you ask about that? couldn’t remember where though…)
Recent Reviews

Well, I can’t say I was super impressed with this issue. It didn’t really advance the story much, and was a bit muddled. I’ve unsubscribed for now, but might catch up if I hear good things about #5.

A very promising beginning. The protagonist is a nicely balanced mix of “what an *hole” and “got gumption”. The bad guy, admittedly in a limited appearance, comes across as very human and plausible, always a good sign. No other characters have really been fleshed out yet, but we were teased with a new character at the very end who figures to factor into the story in #2. I plan to keep reading…
