Someone gave me some comics for my 21st birthday. And suddenly half of my paycheck starting disappearing every month.
And since everyone seems to like animals… I have a dog, a cat, and a bunny. I shall make them robotic armor, à la We3. And together, we shall rule the world.

Confession & Plea
I’m kind of obsessed with The X-Files. I even bought a big box of the Topps comics on eBay before I was really even much of a comic book reader because I was so in love with the show.
Anyway, the new movie is coming out in 10 days, and the new comic even sooner, and I think everyone in the world should go see the movie and buy the comic so they’ll make more of both.
wrong universe
Captain’s Log. Stardate: 200805.31. Received Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 instead of Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 1. Also had an interview for a job, then was told I won’t be getting it because I don’t play enough Halo.
Also, in case anyone reads this who isn’t already enamored of HI, I want to note that I emailed them as soon as I noticed the problem, and we resolved it immediately and I’ve had Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 1 in my possession for quite a while now. So go give them all your money.
Do we know about this through the normal channels? Are we fixing it the right way? Give a shout if not!
oops
The only problem with buying comics from HI instead of at a local shop is that I tend to buy things thinking in terms of how much money I have available at a given time, and then nothing ships for a while and I forget and buy other things, and then everything ships at once (or all the big things, anyway), and I am left wondering if maybe buying all that stuff wasn’t such a good idea after all, given my current employment status.
superheroes?
I received a shipment packed with Hero By Night goodness today. I think this strange feeling I am experiencing is a desire to allocate a large chunk of my comic funds to the superhero genre. Weird. I’ll have to try to control that, though. I’m too anal about completion to even think about trying to get into Batman or any other major, established hero.
I find that most superhero titles have been going on way too long and have a large backstory which makes it difficult to jump right in. That’s one of the reasons I got into Marvel’s Ultimate universe. It’s a relatively recent reboot of some Marvel characters. The first trade of Ultimate Spider-Man is what got me into comics in the first place.
Anyways, I also just got my HbN trade. It is truly “teh awesomeness.”
EDIT: I swear I’m not stalking you, despite commenting on a blog post 15 or so minutes after you posted. Coincidence, I swear. : )
What Robert said.
I got my HBN hardcover the other day – need to make some time to read it (hopefully tonight!)
If you really want to get into other superheroes, may I suggest Project Superpowers from Dynamite? Despite the fact that many of the characters are from the 1940s all the backstory you really need is in the #0 issue, since most of these guys hadn’t seen publication since 1950. There’s some additional backstory in the FCBD Special, but nothing major.
and among other superhero still, there’s the whole Farberverse that Jay Faerber is building within his three series: Noble Causes, Dynamo 5, and the latest, Gemini. I’ve only read Gemini #1 with a slew of previews from the other series but I know I will end up reading and loving tons of his stuff…
Dynamo 5 Vol. 1 just shipped. Here’s hoping you (and whoever else recommended it? Or maybe it was you somewhere else but not directed at me specifically?) have good taste. :)
I’m halfway through Dynamo Vol 1 and enjoying it quite a bit. I find the writing funny, the banter between the kids is cool and the premise of the whole thing is neat. As they say, ymmv but I hope you like it too. I think that for a self contained superhero universe, Jay Faerber is doing some good work.
animals!
Charlotte:

Diego:

Mr. Bunny (he used to be Artemisia, but then he turned out to be a he, and he never really got a new name):

I’ve got two Siamese cats myself. Charlie and Caesar. I decided today that after 6 years, I’m going to start calling Charlie Chuck. Or maybe I’ll call him Chuckie. :)
I’m a dog person.
So: yay Charlotte! She’s a cutie. Does she give slobbery “kisses”?
Nah, Charlotte’s all weird and neurotic and has intimacy issues. She’s always been more of a dog dog than a people dog.
Elsie, though… Elsie gives big, slobbery kisses.
blog?
So apparently all the cool kids are using these “blog” things now to let people know what’s new in their lives. I guess I can do that.
Yesterday I graduated from college. It was cold and rainy and miserable. But now I’ve got a diploma. So that’s cool. Except it turns out people who major in math and Russian aren’t really in high demand.
What kind of world do we live in that Mathematicians aren’t in high demand?! That’s utterly scandalous. On the other hand, there are plenty of math-related things you could do. (A lot of the most interesting computer science topics use hardcore math. Which makes me sad, because I don’t have all the math I need to understand them…)
Hey, hire me as your personal mathematician, and together we can do some awesome.
wishlist
This is mostly a reminder of trades I’m supposed to buy next time I feel like buying something just for the sake of spending money.
- Fables
- Lucifer
- Walking Dead
- Y: The Last Man
- Absolute Sandman
- Anything by John Van Fleet
Fun fact: I liked what I saw of Van Fleet’s art when I bought a huge box of X-Files comics on eBay, so I Googled him to see what else he’d done, and it turns out I’d been working about 50 feet from his brother for the past two years.

Gosh! I thought I had put my “looks a bit like Jesus” days behind me when I cut off my hair…

Pete, random thing that just occurred to me… When I see your avatar out of the corner of my eye (such as when I’m reading your posts), it looks a lot like the Jesus Mii on my Wii. And it too me a really long time to figure out what was so familiar about it, because when viewing it directly, it doesn’t look like that at all.
Just thought I’d share.

You can help us in the Cold War!! Not that Cold War. The second one, the secret one.
Ahhh, a tech job. I’ve been looking for a tech job for about, oh, 7 months to the day. :( Not to paint a bad picture for you or anything. Hahaha. I think it may be easier actually for a younger person to get hired than someone my age (36). So, hopefully something will come up for you. Good luck!

Thanks! I’m mostly looking for tech jobs now, since that’s where all my experience lies, anyway. Now, if only someone would put out the call for Russian-speaking Jr. DBAs, I’d be set…
Hey there! Congrats on graduating! Too bad the weather didn’t cooperate. Math and Russian, huh? Hmm. Not sure how that can combine into something. I have to give it some thought. Do you play chess? That’s sort of math based and most of the greats seem to come from Russia. :)
