newsletters : HI Newsletter #17: Contests, Covers, Comics!

But first, a fanboy moment...

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!

Ok, normally I try to keep a cool head. I enjoy a lot of different franchises across multiple media, but I try not to get overwhelmed.

But I admit to having a full-blown fanboy moment this week, when I learned about a recently announced IDW project.

Star Trek: The Next Generation... Doctor Who... TOGETHER!!!

The Eleventh Doctor... Jean-Luc Picard... Borg... Cybermen...

I can't wait. And rest assured, once it's in our system for preorder I'll be plugging it in a future newsletter. In the meantime, feel free to discuss in the forum!

Meanwhile...

Contests!

Marlow Preorder Contest

The first Marlow contest, for the signed copy preorder upgrade, has concluded! Using the random generation capabilities of dice (oldschool!), I determined the three winners of this contest and have emailed them!

Survey Contest (Last Chance to Enter!)

The survey gift card draw hasn't happened yet. Why? Because you still have a few more days to answer the survey!

The last day of the survey will be this coming Monday, February 20th. So get those survey answers in soon!

New Contest

We've got a new contest to announce... hold on, this should get it's own section...

The HeavyInk Newsletter Review Revue Contest

Joe and I bring you reviews to cool stuff each week. But, there's so much stuff out there to cover, we can't get to everything. We also tend to have our own personal biases (I'm a little bit mainstream, he's a little bit rock-and-roll... er... manga.)

This is where you come in!

The newsletter coming out in two weeks will feature 3 user-written reviews.

Details and entry are on the forum, on the review revue contest thread!

If it goes well, I hope to make this a recurring feature of the newsletter. (No pressure!)

Speaking of reviews...

A God Somewhere

I read this one last night, and it was intense. I don't want to say too much or give anything away, but this is an epic, superhero tragedy. (It says that on the cover, so it's not a spoiler.)

A lot of superhero stuff is positive and inspiring. This is one of the darker, cautionary tales.

Note that it is for mature readers. John Arcudi doesn't pull punches in his storytelling. He touches on what can be controversial issues, like race and faith, but he stays contemplative about them, avoiding the temptation to get preachy (unlike some writers - I'm looking at you, Shakespeare!) But, what some people may really have trouble with is the violence, drawn in graphic detail by Peter Snejbjerg.

If you think you can handle all that, I highly recommend this moving, dramatic book that makes you think.

God Somewhere

The Omega Effect

Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Punisher are teaming up in a three-part crossover called The Omega Effect. It's running through these three issues:

  1. Avenging Spider-Man #6
  2. Punisher #10
  3. Daredevil #11
One of the things I love about the mainstream Marvel/DC universes is the interactions between all these superheroes. This looks to be a fun mini-event!

Note: The subscribe button below is for the Avenging Spider-Man series, you have to get the three issues separately from the above links if you don't already subscribe to their titles.

Note 2: These issues are FEB solicits for April release dates, and we don't have the FEB solicits put into your subs yet. In my case, I just bought Punisher #10; since I already subscribe to Avenging Spidey and Daredevil, their issues will be showing up in my subs soon!

Avenging Spider Man #6

'The Omega Effect' Begins Here Bringing Together Marvel's 3 Biggest Heroes From The Most Acclaimed New Books Of The Year! Spider-Man, Daredevil And Punisher In An Epic Chase Across Manhattan For A Mysterious Treasure That Will Change The Course Of All Their Lives.

Final items

Ok, a few more things to throw in before I finish for this week:

The next big Marvel event is Avengers vs. X-Men. There's a bunch of tie-ins and whatnot surrounding it, so I've used HeavyInk's handy list feature to make an Avengers vs. X-Men list for you! I'll keep it updated throughout the event. If I miss anything, you can let me know on the forum.

The 'sub all covers' feature, where you can get true variants, is coming back. It's a complicated thing, so rather than delve into it here, might I suggest you read more about it on the forum.

There's various zany legal battles going on right now surrounding comics. News broke last week that a creator of Ghost Rider, Gary Friedrich, lost a legal battle to get rights of Ghost Rider from Marvel and was going to have to pay Marvel $17,000 he made by drawing Ghost Rider at comic conventions and things. Marvel bigwigs say that the $17,000 is just part of a court document to move the case along to the appeal phase, and that they're not planning to go after artists who draw Marvel characters at conventions. I'm sure more on this will be coming out soon.

Meanwhile, artist for the first six issues of Walking Dead, Tony Moore, is suing Robert Kirkman, creator of Walking Dead. Is Moore greedy, or is Kirkman being unfair to his longtime friend? Will the courts decide justly? Tune in... someday when the courts eventually decide something. (It took Gaiman and McFarlane 10 years to figure stuff out.)

Ok, that was a jam-packed newsletter! Joe will be back next week with more recos, and I'll see you in two for the Newsletter Review Revue.
