My Current Top 10

I know, another ass-kicking loner on my list. I like Spector’s story because it’s not as far-reaching as other costumes: many days he’s content with smacking around some fairly garden-variety crooks. It’s like a blue-collar hero, based on hard work and puttin’ in the hours. It also shares the current Marvel production that has brought good looks to Capt America and Invincible Ironman.

An Indy that has the right moves. It has a good concept, and the writing doesn’t try to do too much. They had enough story for three issues (and three one-ups) and that’s what they did, with superb execution. Some witty points in there, and generally fine art. (Tough call between this and “City of Dust” to shout out for small books, for a lot of same reasons.)

I would probably like anything written by Frank Miller and drawn by Jim Lee. Even separately. So, put them together and I can’t say no. It doesn’t hurt that I dig Gotham and Batman.

Look, Big Blue has led the way since the ‘30s. Yeah, he can come across as corny and maybe it’s a struggle to come up stuff that’s fresh. But, when he plays true to archetype, he’s at his best. That’s why Bats calls him the “Boy Scout,” both in admiration and contempt. Supes does what he does because its whats in his heart. (You don’t screw with the formula for Coke either.)

This book has what its Justice League sister doesn’t: a sense of its own purpose. Its a formula that has worked for decades, new-myth superheroes who team up to defeat evil. Why stray from that just to say you did? Unpretentious and delivers the goods. (I’m a Budweiser guy; you always know what you’re gonna get, and it’s satisfying.) It has a grasp of its history and it’s not embarrassed by that.

The Ron Marz stortelling is well-grounded. Pezzini stays in her New York world and deals with all the turmoil the artifact brings to her life. Absolutely love the Stepan Sejic artwork. I’d get the book just for the painted pics, so combining it with solid plot and script is high cotton.

Bravo to Quesada et al for making this book fun again. I look forward to seeing this in my box. Even when the stories are a little goofy, the lighter touch in the writing style makes them worthwhile. The writing crew has realized that the story is as much about Peter Parker as it is Spiderman.

Solitary pissed-off dude who spends his nights figuring out how to bring some rough justice down on the baddies (sounding familiar, but without the killing…). I get Detective also, as well as many of the other books in the Gotham Universe.

I just like Danny Rand. Its fun to see how you combine an Eastern psuedo-Zen philosophy with the ultra-cosmopolitan New York sensibility. Just breathe deep and let it flow like water around you and everything will work out….

Lonely pissed-off dude who brings a world of hurt to those who deserve it, what’s not to like? I miss the Garth Ennis/Goran Parlov team up, but current crew is following well in that large (for me) shadow.
