It doesn’t get any better than this, frankly. Madman is one of the iconic characters of indie comics publishing, incorporating elements of mainstream superhero, sci-fi, and horror comics but bringing a unique and downright existential perspective to the proceedings.

There’s something blissfully unaware about the storyline in both these collected miniseries; they go everyplace and no place rather quickly, with lots of fun asides and weird non-sequiters. It’s really just one big excuse for Allred to explore the nature of reality, existence, and dreams with Frank Einstein, the titular Madman, who is somehow able to be incredibly naive and insightful at the same time.

Allred’s clean, smooth linework is perfectly complimented by wife Laura’s stunning colors in the second part of this book, defining the look that would characterize the character up to today.

This is where it all starts, and if you can’t spare $20 to try a comic that may be better than anything you’ve bought in years, then may God have mercy on your soul.
