Just finished the first trade of I, Zombie. Wow. Good read. Real good read. I bought the first issue when Vertigo sold it for a dollar and I wasn’t impressed. It felt very light, as if nothing too interesting was really going to happen. That’s an OK premise, so long as the characters are engaging and, at least in the first issue, they just weren’t. The trade is an entirely different story though. Right off the bat, the trade was telling the story and characters better by including a really nice prelude not included #1. Kind of surprising since it completely changed how the first issue read and even touched on some of the main plot points of volume one. I guess you only get so many pages to tell your story though. And the story isn’t groundbreaking, hinging much on pretty standard ginchy 50’s monster movie trappings but with enough clever tweaks to keep it interesting (and let’s face it, Allred excels at this kind of subject matter). The characters really came to life (ha) as the issues went on and I finished the book thinking it doesn’t read like a normal comic so much as a TV show. Pushing Daisies? Anybody watch that? This is the like comic book equivalent of Pushing Daisies. I friggin loved that show.
