It's such a brilliant idea that it's almost a miracle someone else hadn't jumped all over it yet--exploring the work of Jack Kirby not as an homage, or as a copy, but as a GENRE. His comics have enough of their own unique character traits to support genre status, whether it's his trademark tiny energy balls or the tendency of his characters to speak in quasi-biblical pronouncements.

In terms of visuals and story, Godland manages to extract Kirby's ethos into a new tale that is tempered by the smartass humor of writer Joe Casey. There's unforgettable visuals that in terms of manic genius are almost worthy to stand alongside any of the King's greatest creations.

Which is not to say that Godland is "as good as anything Jack Kirby ever did, OMG," just that artist Tom Scioli and Casey have really tapped into the crazy vein that Kirby used to give us the Fourth World, the Eternals, OMAC, Devil Dinosaur, and so many other insane seventies creations. It's a tone and a voice that the comics world could use more of today, and it lives here.
