I’m a martial arts enthusiast who owes (or blames for) his recent discovery of the world of comics to his 4 and 11 year old sons. Big fan of the usual Marvel suspects (Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, Avengers) again mostly because of them little ones, I’ve also grown to love more mature stuff as well as some great indie series. Add to the mix some occult of supernatural reading and you got my pull list.
Asterix and Obelix will always hold a dear place in my heart, as they were the comics I grew up with…
Hey man, how has invinicble Iron Man been? I was watching clips of it in prep for the dvd release and I’m dying to get more Iron man stuff!
So, Jay discovered a bug – there was a problem with his URL. His friend link works now, and we’ll get to squashing bugs soon enough. Thanks again for the heads-up.

hey, I wanna be friend with Jay Faerber too! :(
Decided to drop House of Mystery? Did you make it to issue #5? After #4 I decided to drop it but I’m tempted to give it one more shot to get me hooked and finish the arc.
Saw you subscribe to the Daredevil & Captain America Team-up book. I think it looks great, here are some early images from the team!

I hope it works heh
lol, I ended up watching the whole first season over the last few days. My 8mo watched most of one episode, but I was really impressed at the quality of the show – it may be meant as a kids ‘toon, but any Spidey fan would like it, IMO
FrogMan said:
as I said, my 4yo is a big fan and while I’ve almost never sat down to watch an episode by myself, I’ve seen most of them. Good retelling of the Spidey mythos for today’s kids in my opinion…
yeah, it’s pretty good stuff – I tried to get my 7 month old to watch it (she likes anything moving on TV, and we all know it’s important to intro Spidey at a young age) but she was too busy fussing…watched the first two eps tonight, I gotta say that Curt Connors’ lab may be the most dangerous place in New York…

I haven’t seen any episodes…yet (downloading is now in progress) :)

I love, love, love that new avatar of yours, the Venom of Spectacular Spider-Man. :) Are you a fan of the show? Both my sons love it, but my four year old is really into it. I cut the ads from the first 13 episodes that I had recorded as they came on and put them on three separate DVDs, they are in regular rotation at our house… :)
so much for the pencil sketch version. I will change back because that is my trade mark picture on all boards – just wanted to give you a hard time. Really enjoy this site – thanks for pimping it (I have too over at CBR in the PROOF forum)
FrogMan said:
and you also seem angrier ;) I liked the blue one better to be honest :)
only my hand does that weird red & green thing

lol, you seriously look like these guys :)
that is me

speaking of that avatar, is that one of the Blue Men from Blue Man Group?
thanks – i will have to make sure and stop in regularly

welcome to HeavyInk! :)
My favorite part of SheBuccaneer: the centerfold! I thought it was interesting that (according to the cover) it is #1 of 3. We’ll have to see what they do after that.
FrogMan said:
hey Andy, I just finished reading that #1 of SheBuccaneer and wow, that was indeed a lot of fun. Very different from a lot of what can be found out there. Very glad I took a chance on that one and me too, I’d wish August was a bit closer. :)
Ha! I figured it out eventually, but for a moment I thought there must be some cool book I wasn’t remembering, that maybe I should be reading…
FrogMan said:
oops, meant RMfM there, not EMfM
Gah! I was nearly certain you were subscribed to RMfM, should have checked before asking….
FrogMan said:
gah, you are teasing me here, this is not nice! :p
I didn’t have RMfM on my pull list and now I’m seriously thinking about it. I wavered about getting it or not, the superhero side of things might make me want to get it even more now. I do like superhero things. :)
Re: HoM 5 part story arc… hmmm, yeah, knowing that there’s a nearby destination makes it easier to consider sticking with it…
FrogMan said:
re: HoM#2, hrm, from the solicit text for #5 out on Comics Continuum:Part 5 of “Room and Boredom.” In the extremely destructive conclusion to the first story arc, Fig Keele has literally brought down the House, but couldn’t she have waited until everyone got out alive first?a five part arc, might be tempted to let it go the way and then kick it, then I might kick it after next issue. We’ll see…
Hey FM. I just read my copy of Shebuccaneer, and I really liked it. It made me really wish August was a little closer. You’ll have to let me know what you thought once you have a chance to get to it.
Also, I just read Red Mass for Mars also. And I agree with Petey. Very cool story. And really made me look forward to #2.
Cheers!
Oh, and did you read Red Mass for Mars #1? If so, what did you think, after the long wait? I thought it was pretty good, despite more of a superhero angle than I was expecting…
Re: House of Mystery #2, I’m with you on the substories, though I though this one was a bit better than the first one. I think I’ll give it one more go and then drop it if it doesn’t kick it up a notch…
FrogMan said:
hey Pete, have you had a chance to read House of Mystery #2?
Just read it and I’m torn about it. I wanna know what’s going to happen with the lady in the main story, who’s the voice and all that, but the story within the story, well, I thought it was frankly quite boring… I’ll ponder a bit…
Man Walking Dead is such a amazing series im on TPB volume 7, I like the trades better because the covers are by Tony Moore and they combine into one big picture. You gotta read this series.
Hey frogman, I’m from Toronto, my uncle is from Montreal, never been though. I hear great things about Quebec. I’m thinking about going on a road trip to Montreal sometime. Maybe for a comicon or something. I pretty much forgot how to speak french after grade 8, I can only remember a mashup of random words :s. Anyways good to hear from a fellow Canadian.
L8R
Hey Frogman, I saw u subed Terminator 2 Infinity. If you like it check out the Terminator Ominubus TPB from Dark Horse. If your a fan of the movies and the tv show check it out. Great stories in it about john conner’s special forces crew heading back in time to protect scientists, that are responsible for creating human tissue on top of terminators.
Quote from Wiki… “Series creators Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona left the series at issue #24 of the title’s second volume. After Joss Whedon began to write the series, it began to suffer delays and has recently fallen into a tri-monthly schedule. Marvel has announced Terry Moore, creator of Strangers in Paradise will take over the title after Whedon leaves, with Humberto Ramos on art.”
You have no idea now much I just wanted to end the quote after “suffer.”
FrogMan said:
and I was wondering. I have read the first two hardcovers of Runaways last year (been a while, last Summer I think) and I think I remember that Brian K Vaughn was writing them. When did Whedon take over full time? Only thing I can remember is that I absolutely loved those two hardcovers and Runaways have been on my wish list ever since. Simply has not happened yet for me to get my hand on more hardcovers, for many silly reasons…
Hey dude, I’m thinking of ordering Strangers In Paradise myself. I saw the add for the books in my latest Echo issue. Let me know how you like it when you finish the first volume.
You know, I read though a few issues of Strangers in Paradise while I worked at a LCS… enough to know that you can’t just read one issue of it and enough to know that I wanted to read more! I hope I didn’t make you think that I was just excited that Joss was leaving… I am also excited that Moore is coming! :)
FrogMan said:
LOL! For some reason, and I’m basing this only on what I’ve read from you here and on your blog (yeah, I did venture over there), you don’t seem like the kind of people to hold something like that inside no matter who you are around. :)
Seriously, have you read some Terry Moore stuff? I’m thinking he’ll do quite well with the Runaways.
HELLS YEAH! At the con, Joss Whedon was mentioned and I was like “UGH I HATE HIM!” and I would have gotten killed with the looks I got shot with. Then I realized that these people are not comic people, they’re TV people, thus they have not read Joss’ horrors… I should have been smarter not to say such things around them.
FrogMan said:
and speaking of Runaways, very much looking forward to Terry Moore’s run in August
Glad you liked it! It really is packed with action, witty lines, and consistent plot development (When you get to it, issues 11 and 12 were crazy good). I just read Gemini and I hope it continues to deliver as well. I looked at those Archives books too, just waiting till i convince myself to empty my pockets, but it is a great deal.
FrogMan said:
hey Chris, I gotta thank you for being the catalyst behind my discovery of Jay Faerber. Just started reading the first trade of Dynamo 5 and wow, what a load of fun it is. Only up to the second issue, but I can see that’ll be hooked.
That forum post of your a few weeks back made me order the annual, then the trade, then I saw Gemini (which I subscribed to and have read #1, also a lot of fun) and now I’m thinking about getting the two Noble Causes Archive books. Thanks again!
Ah, good point, although I see someone just made a “what i got today”type thread.
FrogMan said:
cool, glad you too got some use out of the list. HI had shipped me Caliber on time and I enjoyed it greatly. It was only Hercules that was late and it got shipped yesterday, weehee! :)
About that thread, I thought about something similar but srt of discarded it since not everybody receive their comics at the same time. I get mine about a week after they’ve shipped, so we’re about a week late compared to what everybody else in the comics world is talking about. The “pull” threads are cool cause they are drumming up interest into what’s coming up.
Hey FrogMan, Ditto on the Bargain Bin List! And i see youve been waiting on the Radical comics. Just by chance my local comic shop had a copy of hercules (he said both that and caliber sold out the day they came in) and HI sent me Caliber….Hope you get to see both, they were awesome! Ah where was i? Yes! Since I probably wont be reliable enough to post it, what do you think of a “your favorites of the week” thread?
Froggie, just wanted to say “thanks” for that AWESOME list of cheapie preview issues. I got four books to check out for the price of one regular issue of an ongoing series! Sweet!
Hey man, glad to hear you liked Young Liars #1, I got issue 1 and 2 over the weekend. I definitely agree with you about issue #1, but man #2 will totally blow you away.
I’m absolutely in love with this series, and the band/song angle Lapham is doing is really stellar.
I also really love the art btw, issue #1 had some really great panels especially when Sadie is jumping into the crowd, great layout and coloring.
FrogMan said:
juts read Young Liars #1 and what a fantastic first issue that was. I’d call it a “textbook first issue” in that it had the good setup of who were going to be the actors in the drama, where the drama was going to come from and where it might be going at.
Yeah, I feel the same way. I think I’ll give it one more issue…
FrogMan said:
first thoughts about House of Mystery #1, repost from my mini-blog:Just finished reading it and I’m left feeling a bit, “huh?”. Had not really realized it will be set as two parters like that and I’m not so sure I like that. I guess I’ll see in the next issue or two if I want to stay with it or not but for now it’s not off to a “I need a new issue RIGHT NOW” kind of start.
It is a rare beginning, I think. It was also the reason why I was so far ahead of most everyone else in “reading” when I started school. Of course, that’s ALL I was ahead of them on….heh.
FrogMan said:
cool story your start with comics. :)
Welcome aboard!
Hey dude. Just realized I don’t think I’ve ever “blurbed” you. :) Wanted to say I appreciate your posts and your blog entries. I enjoy reading about the titles you are trying out. I usually try to stay away from reading CBR because I got tired of the spoilers. I started out there though before HI came along. Anyway, you save me the trouble of going there! :) Thanks.
I’m in Ontario, two hours from Toronto.
FrogMan said:
hey, fellow Canuck, which part of the Great White North are you in? I live nearby Quebec City…
Hey, I was thinking about checking out a few more Vertigo titles than I am currently and was going to give Young Liars a go. How has it been so far?
Any other vertigo books to try?
Thanks for the link for DCU #0 by the way!
Heh. Yeah my master says to not use chairs any more and just do the horse stance all the time. And yes, Taichi and Kungfu are all about being rounded and relaxed all the time. The way I’m learning it, taichi is just kungfu slowed way down, so you can master the details of every movement. I tried Karate once, and didn’t like it, but that was because the teacher was more interested in showing off his weapons than anything else. What makes Kenpo Karate different from normal Karate?
FrogMan said:
Just recently received my Shodan (black belt) in Kenpo Karate. Been practicing it for five years now.
Did an hour or so of kungfu at a seminar back in early March. It kicked my ass with its freaking low horse stance, but it was very cool. So different in movements from what I’m used to though, much rounder, if you know what I mean. Taichi, I know very little about.
You bet. I see you also do martial arts. What kind? I’ve recently taken up kungfu and taichi.

Hey, are you planning on picking up DC’s Final Crisis? I’m not a fan of Grant Morrison’s rhaz al Ghul crossover, but man this book is getting so much hype!
Hey, by the way, have you read any of the Sin City trades? I was thinking about picking a few up, but the “library” collection is out of stock, and I wonder how good the quality is on the 2nd printing stuff.
Knew about the prologue, but not the Saga Issue. Thanks.
FrogMan said:
yay, another Marvel fan!!! Marvels rocks! You probably already knew about it anyway, but Marvel have made the Secret Invasion Prologue issue and the Secret Invasion Saga issue available online. See my mini blog posts for more information and links.
What would you say you’ve been enjoying the most from your pull so far(your “top of the stack” so to speak)? Maleev’s work on Daredevil, with Brian Bendis writing I thought, was amazing! I ended up picking up the hardcovers liking it so much, so I can’t wait for Maleev to be back on Daredevil(even if its a cameo or whatnot). Btw I read my friends copy of SI #1 great stuff, can’t wait to see where it goes!
All fixed, sorry! I had it set for only friends. :)
FrogMan said:
I meant, we can read snippets of your blog posts on the frontpage, but the blog isn’t showing on your profile page for some reason. Maybe you have it for friends only. That way, I read about a webcomic on the snippet, but it cuts off before I get a link. Quite a teaser… :D
you’ll notice in my latest post ‘the site’ is a hyperlink. There are two strips up to read, three by now, and I’m updating it on mondays and thursdays for now. I’ll move to m/w/f in a couple weeks if I can get myself movin again. :)
FrogMan said:
so I keep reading tiny blog posts on the front page, stuff about a webcomic and I come here and nothing to read, that’s not nice, not nice at all :p
I wanna see that webcomic!!! ;)
I’m really interested to see what they’re going to do with this series. They touched a little bit on Fury and Wolverines’ pasts early on in Ultimate X-Men, so I’m wondering if they’re going to keep that or pretend that it never happened. I wish they wouldn’t tease us with announcements and then delay the series for a year. I’m still waiting for Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk…...Damn you Bendis!!!
FrogMan said:
just saw this Bendis feature about Ultimate Origins on CBR and thought you might be interested…
enjoy!
I forgot all about Iron Fist. I have the first several issues. Adding it now. :)
FrogMan said:
true, but tell me, speaking of martial arts comics, how come I don’t see Immortal Iron Fist on your pull list? Did you try it and not like it?
It’s really high on my list of favorite books, very well done stuff…
Yup, I saw a number of good stuff on your list that I would like.
I think we both love a good story, and have a soft spot for martial art stories.
FrogMan said:
funny how you brought me here, then I added stuff from your pull list to mine and it seems to have somehow turned around a bit and you’ve added some of my pulled stuff to yours lately.
We do have similar tastes… :)
I honestly have no idea what’s up with Ultimate Origins. I’m pretty sure it’s supposed to be a full length mini-series, but I’m guessing it’s just hit chronic delays that seems to plague Ultimate mini-series. I didn’t order the first issue because I thought they would have been out with the trade by now. My misguided faith in comic book timeliness…
Ultimate Hulk vs. Wolverine was slated to be finished a year and a half ago and it still has about 3 issues to go. The worse part about that is that it was supposed to coincide with Ultimates 2: Grand Theft America and now it’s nowhere to be found.
FrogMan said:
I know you are quite into the Ultimate Universe so I’m turning to you on this one. Regarding Ultimate Origins. Has the issue showing up here ever shipped, or is this something that got delayed and delayed. I see there’s a Ultimate Origins series slated to start in June on the Marvel website…
Argh. I went to fix your IE6 issue for the forums today, and realized we have not a single Windows machine running in the office. So, I’ll have to do it from home.
Just thought I’d give you an update.
Sorry to double post, but you might wanna check out Frank Miller’s Daredevil Run, if only one collection Daredevil Visionaries #2. It’s a great book that covers the best of the daredevil stories, and has a ton of ninja’s etc. Elektra Lives is another cool ninja book, also done by Frank Miller.
Hey man awesome pull list, I recently got into comics myself and man I’m having a blast. I’m a huge brubaker fan myself and I’m absolutely loving Daredevil, Criminal, and Iron Fist.
I saw a little info on the lone wolf and cub deal, I havent read it myself but I heard its great. If you want to read Frank Miller’s take on the samurai(in a futuristic crazy setting) I recommend checking out Ronin. Its a crazy book and definitely bizzare, but in retrospect I think its a fantastic read.
I’d love to hear your picks for samurai films as well! My personal favorite are Sword of Doom, Yojimbo, and probably Zatoichi(the new one).
A really great book to check out, though not a samurai or martial arts book, is JMS’s Thor. It’s on issue 6 right now and man this book is really mature and a great book to jump onto. The art is really fantastic and the story as well. It’s definitely going to be one that people talk about.
The only thing that would make HeavyInk any better is if all the comics were free.
FrogMan said:
I agree, it is indeed very cool. I had had some recommendations from another message board but HeavyInk is really incredible in terms of discovering new stuff. The last 11 in my pull list (starting with Locke & Key) were all either added after reading a review here (As for Fell, the FF special), comparing pull lists of people reading stuff similar to what I like (Locke & Key, Gate of the east wind, by simply looking at the “NEW” page (the three twilight crusade titles and you can add Blood Bowl), or again from the recommendation page (Kick ass, Criminal, Doctor Who). Very, very stoked with how HeavyInk is improving my comic fun so far. Will have to control myself a bit though cause I’m getting close to the max I wanna spend… ;)
It is so cool that you’re finding all these new books through HeavyInk. I’m doing the same—Atomic Robo is one that I would never have picked up were it not for HeavyInk. There’s some very cool stuff happening on the fringe of the mainstream and I think this site is ready to do a lot to promote it and make it more visible.
FrogMan said:
thanks for your input (re: Buffy). Base don it and Robert’s input, I’ve decided to pass on it. I’m lacking time to watch past series and there’s still plenty for me to read anyway…
I did pick up another series based on another of your reviews: Fell. Will be getting the trade first, then have added it to my pull list. Saw some previews and liked what I saw very much. Thanks for your reviews, they’ve been very helpful.
This is gonna sound very l33t but Heavy Ink rocks. I’ve discovered a ton of new stuff I probably would not have known about in the one week I’ve been around here.
That is a tough question FMan…if you can find a cheap copy of issue 1, I recommend going for it. Or if you have NetFlix and a lot of time, rent some Buffy DVDs and see if it’s your speed. I can’t really say for sure cause I’m a fan of the show, so reading the comic was no big deal to me.
FrogMan said:
I’ve read your review of Buffy season 8 and it, along with the good review I’ve seen from other friends, is making it tempting. Thing is, I’ve never read, nor followed the TV series. You think a newcomer to the series could pick it up from issue #1 of season 8, not be completely lost and would enjoy it? Thanks in advance.
Reading your blurb on Matt’s page: As much as I hate to say it, if you haven’t seen much of the TV series, I would hold off on Season 8 for a bit. I suggest seeing if your library or video rental place has the DVDs of Buffy and watch the show a bit. I only say this because I wouldn’t want you to be turned off by the fact that you have no idea who these people are.
Then again, I started watching Buffy when it was on Season 5 and I kept up with that while watching reruns of the older episodes at the same time.
In conclusion, I have no idea what you should do. :-) I guess try it out and if you don’t mind being thrust into a story that’s already on it’s eighth season, more power to ya.
