Topic: General / Recommendations for "older" superhero comic titles.

Groo2u2, I do agree with Dan. Even if you are not a Superman fan (which I am not), All-Star Superman is just a very good comic book and it definitely has it’s roots in the Golden Age. You should try #1 and see if you like it. #1 was a free give away during the last Free Comic Day, so it should be easy to find to gage if you like the series or not (in my opinion the issues have been getting better and better).

I know that I have already recommended 2 Alan Moore series for your “Golden Age” selection, and now I just thought of two stand alone books that he did that had the same feel and were a great read. He wrote 2 annuals. First was a Superman (Superman vs Doomsday?) annual drawn by his Watchmen collaborator David Gibbons and the second was a Batman annual drawn by George Freeman (Batman vs Clayface!). Both annuals took a Golden Age type story idea and gave it a modern twist. I don’t have the numbers or the years of publication, but I can dig them up…or maybe some one at the forum can help:)

Now that I think about it, it is interesting how Alan Moore’s books tend to be based on so much Golden Age material and then twist away from it. Hm…I never paid that too much attention before.

Dan,

I have some of Esteban Maroto’s work. I got a book of his illustrations and I got a couple of his stories in a few old black and white magazines. My favorite of his is a Red Sonia story that Neal Adams penciled/laid-out and Maroto finished/inked. Just beautiful. Love how he put in all these intricate textures into his work.

The link to Corben’s list of stuff is mind blowing (!). I’ll see if I can “treat” myself to something cool :) Thank you.

And thank you to the Sam Hiti link. This stuff is great, I am going to buy END TIMES to start with.

Eeek.

Yeah, if your mailman looks at a big cardboard mailer stamped “DO NOT BEND” and stuffs it into a mailbox… I don’t trust your local postal service. :) If you choose to stick with Heavy Ink (which, judging by your tone, you probably won’t), use the UPS-shipping option.

Just curious: Did you use the email form on the Contact Us page, or reply to one of the messages from outgoing@heavyink.com?

Groo2u2, my $0.02: even for those who prefer Batman to Superman, it seems to me that All-Star Superman is such a one-of-a-kind thing (at least, in my admittedly limited exposure to the current “super hero” comic market) that it’s probably worth getting, or at least glancing through in a brick and mortar shop… I think there’s a trade out for the first six issues you could get (here, hopefully) if it turned out that you liked it. I’m not really much into the super hero stuff, unless it works for me as some particular narrowly-targeted nostalgia thing, but All-Star Superman (which I’m resisting the urge to abbreviate) is such a distilled nugget of pulpy 50s goodness, made modern, I couldn’t help but dig it. It’s very fairy-tale-like, I think.

Hmm. Maybe this just means it works for me in some particular narrowly-targeted nostalgia sort of way? But no, I was never really a Superman fan at all…

What’ll kill you is #15. That routinely ends at $125+.

Totleben’s really amazing, isn’t he? And doesn’t he have some sort of degenerative vision problem? But thinking of Totleben, I should say that I thought the late 80s/early 90s Moore/Bissette/Totleben/Vietch Swamp Things were pretty cool, too.

And so yeah, I didn’t think Miracleman was collected, or available, or something. It’s a real bummer that there’s no way to get them that supports the creators of the work.

I Have emailed you several times still no triple money back I guess them’s NOT the rules dude. And to make things clear,no I am not complaning about a small crease, all 3 of the books I bought were smashed, torn and folded in half as the mailer was so thin the mailman bent it in half to shove it in the mailbox. Your packaging is the WORST I have ever seen, I have bought many comics from other sites and they ship them in BOXES so they CAN’T be bent in half. Let’s not forget your ARE dealing with a product people want in good shape not a piece of shit that’s ripped and smashed.

Morrison and Quitely did a great miniseries a few years back (or maybe longer – the years are sort of blurring together at this point) call Flex Mentallo. Highly recommended for it’s weirdness and endearing sentimentality.

Weird. Woulda been cool in the fities, but how many Batman readers from that era can even still read? I’m not reading hte book but I was curious. I think Morrison, who usually does admirable work, might have dug back a little far on this one.

All Star Superman was the first DC title I started reaing on a regular basis. I was super impressed by the creative team behind New X-Men so I followed them when they took on All Star Superman. I left the country after issue 6. I haven’t caught up or picked any more up since I’ve been back, but I really enjoyed the book. Each issue at the beginning of the book’s life had pretty much self contained stories. I especially like the artist’s (Frank Quitely?) depiction of Clark Kent. He’s not just Superman with glasses.

Alex: I currently get All-Star Batman and Robin and that isn’t too bad of a comic. The guy that runs the comic store I go to had recommended me to try All-Star Superman as well, but I like Batman better than Superman and so I chose not to get it…..but maybe I’ll scope out an issue and see for myself before I make any final decisions.
Zombie: Thanks for the warning, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for individual issues then. It might beneifit me more to get a few issues and see if I really like it or not, rather then spending a large amount of money on something I might not like.

Matt,

Corben is incredible…I recently read somewhere that he is over 60 and I am amazed by how “fresh” his work is. I also read the first issue of the Lovecraft series and totally enjoyed it. I think his pen and ink graphics are my favorite…his rendering just looks so unique (that stipple style must take some time!).

Would love to hear your impressions of Robotika…I am no Corben, but I tried to make the best book I am capable of :)

Wow, weird coincidence—I recently read my first Corben comic too.

It was the new miniseries from Marvel, Haunt of Horror: HP Lovecraft. I’m interested in Lovecraft’s writing, and I noticed the original poems and stories are published alongside the comic adaptations, so I gave it a shot.

Great stuff. The stories take some interesting departures from the source texts, but the artwork—MAN. It’s black and white so it’s sorta like pure freebase Corben.

Anyway, worth checking out. As is Atomika, I’m sure—it’s on my list. :)

You can’t complain about the “triple your money back guarantee” until you’ve CONTACTED HEAVYINK ABOUT GETTING YOUR MONEY BACK.

Them’s the rules, dear.

Well, most of the series isn’t that expensive for the individual issues. I saw an eBay auction end for issues 1-8 for like, $10 + shipping. What’ll kill you is #15. That routinely ends at $125+.

As for the graphic novels, don’t bother. They’re MUCH more expensive than buying the individual issues one-by-one.

I can’t specifically find if Buzzboy- Sidekicks Rule TPB is canceled or not – it hasn’t shipped from Diamond and we are unable to place an order for it at this time. Diamond still does show that it should ship, but it doesn’t list a release date. Amazon has it for order, however, it currently isn’t available to ship.

Good Luck!

I also thought that you might enjoy Grant Morrison’s “All Star Superman”. It’s kind of like a Golden Age book, but it has a very modern sensitivity to it…I actually think it might be the best superhero book being put out right now.

About Miracleman…wow (!). The individual chapters were always available in the quarter boxes and the collections were always on sale…I can’t believe they are now this much. There must be some cheaper reprints available somewhere.

Hey guys, I’m really interested in buying the Buzzboy, Sidekicks Rule TPB, and Y’all show it as being available. But I checked with my LCBS and they said that it got cancelled. Can you check to see if it really is available or not? Thanks!!

Miracleman ain’t cheap. Every issue is long out of print and it is in rights Hell now. The cheapest I’ve seen was $250 for the whole series. The trades are even more expensive, as they are rarer.

Dan, where can I get a trade paperback of Miracleman? I tried Amazon.com and all they had was what people were selling and they were wanting hundreds of dollars for them and that was for the paperbacks as well as the hardbacks!!!! Granted, I didn’t check the list for the cheapest offers, but I was hoping to find some for more reasonable prices that that?! Any suggestions as to where to get more reasonable copies of Miracleman?
