They’re here! they’re here!

Like when I was a kid and the big Sears holiday season catalog would show up on our doorstep, I can’t help but be all excited when the new solicitations show up here on HeavyInk. :)

I’ll browse them a bit before talking about stuff I’m interested in, although I can say I see a Hellblazer related title I’ll have to get and one Zombie Red 5 title that intrigues me very much…

So, what does look good to you?

Well, I may be in a minority, but I think I’ll be giving Batgirl a try. I think it has the potential to be a neat story, but it also has the potential to stink. But I’ll try it out. Also Two Face Year One. That’s the title the most caught my eye.

Other than that, I’m looking forward to Spike After The Fall. I’m a big Buffy fan, and Spike was always my favourite character. I haven’t read Angel After The Fall though, so I may have to look into that before the Spike issues come out.

Wow, this is going to be an AMAZING summer for comics. I’m all over The Dark Knight movie coming out this summer, so I think I’m definitely picking up the group of one shots focusing around batman’s villains, Joker’s Asylum (JASON AARON on The Penguin, awesome!!!!) . I’m starting to get to the point where pretty much anything Jason Aaron is a must buy, damn him( his three issue tie in for Black Panther in SI looks like its going to be awesome)!!! I’m also looking forward to Red Mass for Mars, can’t wait for more J. Hickman.

I heard Jason Aaron is doing 3 issues of Hellblazer this summer, I might give that title a go, and see whats up with Keanu.. I mean John Constantine =P.
Btw these covers kick ass

Holy crap! How could I have not seen those? I’m with you, patk514. I cannot wait for The Dark Knight, and I’m also going to look forward to those “Joker’s Asylum” issues.

I thought that a book I enjoyed was now being released in comic form, but even though they share a title they’re not related. Still, the description of the comic seemed promising enough that I added it to my pull list…

patk514 Not sure if you have read them yet, but Heath Ledger was given a copy of The Killing Joke, to prepare him for his role. And The Man Who Laughs, by brubaker, was sort of a sequel to it, albeit some years after The Killing Joke. Both deal with the origin of the joker.

I’ve been looking for a good on-ramp to the BPRD franchise… looks like there is a new mini-series there. I think I’ll be checking that out.

1355_small FrogMan 318 post(s)

Okay, where to start. Plenty of stuff I’d seen in the Marvel solicitations as early as last week, so why not go with these first…

New additions to my pull list:
Hulk Chronicles WWH: I loved the Civil War Chronicles because they condensed much of the event in thick issues containing 3 issues in one, like a mini trade in a sense. I’ve not followed WWH at all so getting it that way will give me a bit of a Hulk fix.

Marvel Adventure Super Heroes: I’d read about it a while ago, maybe a month and a half ago, and immediately thought about my four year old back then. I plan on reading them for myself first, then finding some time to sit down with him and read the story involving multiple Marvel heroes with him and finally give him the issue to do about whatever he pleases with it. I’m sure he’ll freak out.

Secret Invasion: Front Line: I’m quite into the Secret Invasion, that was a must to me.

These are not on the new page, but a few other additions worth mentionning:
NewUniversal 1959: a one shot expanding the mythos of NewUniversal, since I loved the first series and will read the Shockfront.

Uncanny X-Men (starting with #500): Matt Fraction teams up with Ed Brubacker to start a new era of uncanny X-men.

Astonishing X-Men (starting with #25): Warren Ellis takes over on the astonishing series. I like Ellis very much.

Stuff from other publishers that I had read about and had planned on getting, or at least checking out…

Hellblazer presents Chas: The Knowledge: Been a Constantine fan since my start at reading comics about a year ago and that mini is intriguing enough to be worth a shot.

No Hero: The creative team of Black Summer is starting a new epic, looks interesting enough to pick up the cheapo #0 issue, even though I’ve not read Black Summer. I mean, Warren Ellis for $0.80…

The two pilot season one shots (The Core & Urban Myths): One is by Hickman (Core), the other is introducing some interesting concepts. What with Greek Gods living in our world…

Now stuff I’ve discovered right here…

The Joker’s asylum one shots: Thanks for pointing these out patk514. I didn’t really know what they were although I probably would have found out, but knowing now, and with my interest in Batman, I might certainly pick a few of them. Don’t know if I’ll get them all or only 2 or 3, we’ll see…

Frank Frazetta’s Creatures: Hmmm, from the solicitation text, “the untold adventures of Teddy Roosevelt, Rough Rider, President of the United States and paranormal investigator as he uncovers a plot concocted by a band of nefarious aliens in cahoots with a malevolent ancient Mayan demon to eradicate humanity and claim Earth for their own purposes.” Say what? Not saying I’m on board right away, but I’ll be sure to check the preview...

Titanium Rain: Don’t know why, but the all blue look of that jet fighter just jumped at me and I had to read more about it. Looks to be all sci-fi, on 2031, as a civil war has erupted in China, they follow one pilot’s adventure. After some googling, I’ve found that they have a website for it, that it’s supposed to be a 12 part mini series and that they even are adding supplemental materialo like intel, maps, and jet fighter designs on a bi-monthly basis until issue #1 ships in order to flesh out their fictional world. I just might have to sign up for this one. No superhero, not post appocalyptic per se, then some sci-fi, some war… Very interesting…

ZMD Zombies of Mass Destruction: I’m not a big zombie fan, simply because I never cared much about them although I’ve been meaning to start reading Walking Dead. This one here has some upside. Interesting idea to send zombies as a a special task force in Middle East, and it’s Red 5, so it’s gotta be good. :)

Finally, one trade I won’t want to miss is the Mini Marvels digest book, title Rock Paper Sissors. Not sure you’ve seen those, but they sometimes are in a backpage of some issues. I’ve read a few pages in some of my son’s Marvel Adventures Spider-Man’s issues and they are very funny. You can read some on the author’s website too as well as an interview with the author on CBR.

I’m sure someone from HeavyInk will read this, but you do need an “everything else new” kind of page that would also showcase the one shots and new trades. I know a trade for Foundation will be available in June, but learned about it because I had subscribed to it graphic novels. I knew about the Mini Marvels because I follow Marvel quite a bit. I’m sure there are plenty of interesting new offerings out there that are just waiting to be known…

That’s quite the roundup, sorry for making it so long. I just felt like sharing. :)

Hulk Chronicles WWH: I loved the Civil War Chronicles because they condensed much of the event in thick issues containing 3 issues in one, like a mini trade in a sense. I’ve not followed WWH at all so getting it that way will give me a bit of a Hulk fix.

Ahh. I was wondering what this title was. I think I may have to read it as well. I loved Planet Hulk, but never got around to reading WWH. And yet I started up with Hulk #1. :) Thanks FM.

By the way, is there an official list of the Secret Invasion titles someplace? I did a cursory search for one but didn’t come up with it.

I’ve been looking for a good on-ramp to the BPRD franchise…

BPRD 1946 is great, and being set in the past, doesn’t presume too much familiarity with all the other stuff. But if you want an onramp to BPRD in general, I’d say just start buying the Hellboy trades until you’ve read ‘em all, then start buying the BPRD trades. It’s all awesome stuff.

I can tell you what I’m NOT getting…

Beyond Wonderland… Let’s get it on the table, Alice looks like a prostitute on that cover. Here’s a 7 page preview of the miniseries that came before it, Return to Wonderland http://www.aintitcool.com/node/32894#1 A buncha naked skanks. Really, if I want porn, I’ll get some with real people in it.

Joker’s Asylum… Sad, because I really love the Batman villians. But with the movie coming out, I don’t trust DC to make a good Batman mini series. I’m betting that they’re just churing out crap to get some dough out of it. That’s okay. If I were a businessman in DC right now, I’d do the same thing.

Secret Invasion or Final Crisis anything… you know how I hate tie in titles. I stand firmly against!

If you’re following, that doesn’t leave a lot from the big two. It’s not ‘cause I have a psychological dislike for them (heck, I have a phoenix tattoo), they just honestly suck.

I’m looking at Criminal Macabre (Dark Horse) and Antoine Sharp: The Athiest (Desperado Publishing). Only two, I know. I’m superhero-ed out lately.

Damn it, Frogman….(a) that was an excellent post; (b) you just cost me a lot of money!

I’ve just subbed to ZMD, Titanium Rain, and No Hero.

Seriously, tho, embedding links in your post was awesome… six clicks, and I had three new subs up and running!

LOL! :)

then, (a) thank you kind sir; (b) sorry for you personally, but hopefully for HeavyInk that post caused many more people to spend a lot of money here. Long live HeavyInk!!! :)

Regarding links, yeah, I figured they’d make it easier. The forum here could use some more user friendly interface though regarding that…

8_small Matt 333 post(s)

yeah, the forum needs some kind of easy link feature for connecting title names to listings on the site. I think it’s on the massive engineering list… :)

I’m tempted by those Joker’s Asylum one-shots but I also saw that they’re spitting the whole stack out as a trade later this year. I’m gonna wait for that, or if they’re getting lousy reviews, just wait till they’re in a dollar bin someplace so that I can satisfy my Batman completist fetish without breaking the bank.

Here’s one that caught my eye from the solicits:

http://heavyink.com/title/3194-Storming-Paradise

It’s by Chuck Dixon and Butch Guice, and it’s the story of WWII…if Hiroshima had never happened. Basically, America invades Japan! I don’t think it’s very sci-fi or fantastical—it sounds like straight-up alternate history, and I like Dixon enough to be intrigued…

Only did a quick flip through my Previews on Saturday and nothing really jumped out. Other than Manhunter returning in June it has been a slow two months for me.

1355_small FrogMan 318 post(s)

wow, ZMD sure has shot up the rankings on the front page. Mighty impressive for a true first issue (Contract has a #0 available for only $0.20)...

Shows how well thought of Red 5 are around these parts, deservedly so I should say… :)

Thought I’d point out that Jim Hardison, writer of The Helm is now part of our little community and he’s posted a pretty good lowdown of what the series will be about on his mini-blog.

Welcome aboard Jim!

I’ll be checking out the new BPRD series, too. I really like Hellboy, and those animated Hellboy movies kind of give you a peek at the BPRD team, so I am looking forward to checking out BRPD: The Warning, even though I haven’t really been reading that title before.

Even though it is basically coming out to advertise the movie, I’ll also be picking up Hellboy: The Crooked Man.

And I guess, being new, I don’t understand exactly how the “New Titles” section of HeavyInk works. I guess technically Conan the Cimmerian starts in June with a #0, but the #1 issue does come out in July. I only hope that the new title keeps the style that the old Conan title had.

P.S., I tried to do the neat-o links and quote boxes that is so en vouge in the forums now-a-days, but I couldn’t quite get it to work.
