FrogMan says:

just thought I’d update you on my progress through Outlaw Nation. I’m up to issue 8 or so and while it took me a while to get acquainted with the characters and to understand that this guy was really 100 years old, I’m starting to really like it. Probably much better as a collected book cause I’ll be honest I’m not sure I would have gone past issue #2 in monthlies. Also the B/W thing really doesn’t bother me, almost as if it was meant to be presented in B/W… Looking forward to reading more…

FrogMan says:

Dan, I just received my Outlaw Nation trade and you know what’s interesting? While it was released under the y DC Vertigo banner at the time, it’s reprinted with a big Image logo on it…

Bast says:

What bothers me is they don’t realize or believe they are being offensive.

Dan said:

re: incivility in the forum, why should it be any different than the country at large? my theory is that it’s easier for liberals to associate only with other liberals, so they don’t need to practice being inoffensive…

Did you want to subscribe to Electric Ant? Written by David Mack, covers by Paul Pope.

Ryan R says:

Dan said:

i see you’re the only other person besides me publicly subbed to nexus, so you’re the only person i can share the news with… i get steve rude’s newsletter, and it sounds like both remaining issues are ready for May solicitation and will hit the streets (well, the first one, anyway) in early July.

Wolfy says:

Awesome Dan, thanks for the update on BoTW.

Andy says:

Alex Sheikman says:

Wow, I started reading that…will have to finish that later. Thank you for sending that.

If you do get a chance check out “Captain America: What Price Glory” mini. I think you will enjoy it.

Dan said:

Here it is...

Alex Sheikman says:

I just read you comment about the Nexus books being ready for solicitation in May. Great news! I just got Nexus #99 and #100. It has been such a long time since I read any Nexus, I am going back and re-reading Nexus:Nightmare in Blue before I read the new issues. I have actually been on a Steve Rude kick for the last month or so. I got his Captain America mini (excellent), Spiderman (excellent), Children of the Atom (also excellent), Thor (excellent), and his giant size Legends of DCU #14 (most excellent). I am also thinking about buying his recent “Artist in Motion” art book. Did you ever look through it?

Alex Sheikman says:

Dan, If you are willing to flex your “graphic design muscles” for the fun of it, I would like to talk to you about re-designing the Robotika logo…any interest? Alex-

FrogMan says:

wow, 12 updates of your bio between 3:08 and 3:12pm. You doing some stress test on your server or something? ;)

Alex Sheikman says:

Thank you for the link. Sweet stuff. By the way, you mentioned getting the hardcover Warlock reprint…how was the color on that?

Dan said:

Alex, I just noticed your blurb over at long-gone intern Brian’s account, and thought I’d point you to another place he’s got some art posted:

Jason Copland says:

Yeah, I totally understand the need to change HI’s free shipping policy, itt just doesn’t work out very well for me as I don’t buy much AND our Canadian dollar is worth so little, currently.

I will continue to pop in and hang out here, though. I promise not to spam too much, though! ;)

Dan said:

Sorry to hear our necessary shipping changes won’t work for you… just remember that being a HI community member doesn’t require that you buy anything, so you can still hang out & socialize, let folks know when & where your work is being published, etc.!

Jason Copland says:

Thanks, Dan! Glad you dug it. I still don’t have me a copy (my copies from HI should be here in a week or so), yet, but I did see a copy a friend bought. It turned out pretty nice, if I do say so myself. My first time published in colour!(Well, first time published in colour for sequential work)

Cheers! Jason

Dan said:

Hey Jason – just picked up Perhapanauts #5 – nice job on “the evaluation”! (I’m not sure what to make of the rest of the comic, this is the first issue I’ve read…;-) )

Alex Sheikman says:

Dan,

Garcia-Lopez is an awesome artist. I loved Twilight (and “Cinder & Ash”, “Deadman”, “TeenTitans”, “Jonah Hex”...) one of the best storytellers around who makes his art serve the story and not the other way around (as Neal Adams started doing later on in his career).

I am also looking forward to Vigilante by Leonardi, you guys are sending me that one and I am real curious about it. Leonardi was one of my all time favorites with his work on Cloak and Dagger, Spiderman 2099, Batgirl, and Nightwing being just awesome. But the few recent things he has done have just been “OK” (like the Superman fill ins, and the Justice League story arc).

Alex-

SunToucher says:

Thanks Dan

Dan said:

Hey ST, if you weren’t able to start your sub of Dynamite Pilot with issue #1, you should be able to update it to do so now… we’ve just ordered a few more copies.

FrogMan says:

Don’t remember if it’s with you or another American friend to be honest, guess we’re both getting old. ;)

Anyway, that’s very cool. Were you reading them in English? I’m French first, English second, so I read them in French. I also read all of the Tintin books at one point or another, but the humour in the Asterix ones is what grabbed me more and why I simply liked them more.

There have been three live action Asterix movies that I know of and of the three, I’ve only seen one, Mission Cleopatra. I thought it was very funny and pretty well done and that it remained quite true to the stories I knew and loved as a child. I saw it in French though, i.e. non-dubbed, no clue if a dubbed version would be good or not, although I read on wikipedia that the English dubbed version was Americanized a little bit.

No clue if that would interest you or not, but with the Holidays coming, TV will be showing plenty of animated Asterix movies in French around here. I could record them and send you the DVDs. That is, if you can understand French… :)

Dan said:

Asterix & Oblix are awesome – I grew up reading those, too (and Tintin). But maybe we talked about this already? Can’t remember… anyway, I recently learned there were some live action Asterix movies… have you seen them? If so: any good?

TJIC says:

“Anyone else remember the ‘90s Not really, but folks who do said it looked like I was enjoying myself.”

LOL!

Alex Sheikman says:

Here is that site: wrightsonsfrankenstein.com

Dan said:

Bleargh. Didn’t get to the con. Oh well.

Alex Sheikman says:

Bummer. I remember a few years ago Wrightson was asking people to send him high resolution scans of the illustrations that they purchased from him because he was going to publish his own version of the book. It was going to cost $300-400…but I wonder if he gave-up on that and gave the files over to Dark Horse for this new book.

Dan said:

Bleargh. Didn’t get to the con. Oh well.

Alex Sheikman says:

Dan, great Berni Wrightson story! And an awesome surprise in the form of a Ralph Reese story…that is simply excellent. All just in time for the Frankenstein reprint (I think I now have 2 copies of it, paperback from when Marvel published it, a hardcover from a few years ago when Underwood reprinted it…and now I am thinking of buying this one as well if the reproductions are good).

Dan said:

Some Bernie Wrightson for ya!

Sofafort says:

Now that is some pro-level customer service! This is why Heavy Ink gets my funnybook money. Thanks, Dan!

Dan said:

If you were unable start your sub to Dynamite Pilot with issue one, you can go back and update it to start with #1 now – we’ve ordered more.

SunToucher says:

SunToucher says:

Hi Dam,

I just saw your blurb regarding Mesmo. I’ve been waiting for that one and forgot about it until I saw said blurb.

Thanks very much for posting that, it looks like it’s going to be a good one.

Rugdog says:

Rugdog says:

you can put the seventh page up! but after that no more! I don’t think we meant to send the whole thing.

Dan said:

Oh, also – you guys sent me a PDF of entire issue – is it OK to put the whole thing up here, or just part of it? I’ve got six (<- arbitrarily chosen number) pages up now.

James R. Rummel says:

Great idea! I’ll try it.

Dan said:

Well, I try to avoid works by authors who think I’m an idiot, too, which is a great way of putting it. Unfortunately, I’m not a big reader of the superhero stuff these days, other than a sort of unkickable nostalgia addiction to the sort of 1960-70s cosmic space opera-type stuff that’s still going on in occasional special series like Annihilation, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy, etc.

I think your best bet is to start a forum thread asking for adivce. Most of the folks there follow the current crop of superhero titles closely and enthusiastically. Since the ways to find folks on HeavyInk are mostly via interaction in the forum, following linked reviews, etc., I’m guessing not many folks know your blog is here (there IS a list of all public personal profiles, but it’s currently not easy to find/notice – something we’ll shortly be addressing). Anyway, I think folks would be very happy to recommend stuff to you in the forum.

James R. Rummel says:

You said….

“BTW, James, a couple of us HeavyInkers are Chicagoboyz fans…”

I am thrilled that you have read my unworthy posts. Thank you kindly for letting me know!

Dan said:

OK, so, I finally had time to read and take a closer look at Marlow. It’s great – just ordered #1!

Aaron Thomas Nelson says:

Thanks Dan! Really liking this site!

Dan said:

Hi Aaron – welcome to HeavyInk!

B Reddy says:

NOOOOOOO!

RobertS says:

The worse part is, the more you talk about it, the further down it goes. O_O It just slid lower!!!

Dan said:

Damn – Daynah’s blurb about her boobs finally begins its inexorable slide down the page. Oh well.

Dan says:

Pat1337 says:

Hey man, I saw that you are picking up the new issue of The Killer. I don’t know what’s been going on with the long wait, but I highly recommend you check out a movie called Le Samourai, a fantastic movie about a french hitman, and from what I’ve heard a major influence for this comic.

daynah says:

Sooo it looks like you’re the reason HeavyInk’s logo wont be on my boobs at a nerdy con. ;)

Are No says:

Oh, no. Haha. I have seen it though. Mastodon’s my favorite band, so that’s why I have that up.

Dan said:

Are you the guy who made that webcomic?

Kiriska says:

Oh, apologies for taking so amazingly long to reply. I apparently don’t check this often. You can see my illustration work at: deadend-detour.com

Dan said:

So, is there anyplace online one can see your illustration work?

daynah says:

Yeah! It’s one of my favs! I’m a Grant Morrison fangirl. :) Invisibles was actually one of the first comics I read. You should read it whie tripping on cold medicine. I called me friends explaining that the Beatles were God and didn’t get much further than that.

Dan said:

Have you read The Invisibles? It’s outstanding.

Brian! says:

Thanks for the heads up. It’s good to see that our efforts to make every issue accessible have been appreciated.

Dan said:

Atomic Robo gets a nice mention in an aside here

daynah says:

That’s cool that your mom got you into comics. I’m scared that because I like comics, me kids are going to rebel and like… football or something dastardly like that.

And whenever I read or watch something horrid I think about all the people it went though that said, “Yes, this is worth risking out money on.” There’s writer, artists, colorists, inker and letterer (all depending of course)... then comes more than a few editors. Don’t ever blame one editor for a work, there’s always an editor editing an editor. Then marketing and other departments read it, or at least sample the titles occasionally.

And ALL of those people said… “YES! We are going to sink some money into THIS project because we think people are going to buy so much of THIS that we’ll make money off of it. THIS is where it’s happening! THIS is where it’s at!”

That’s usually where I start crying in horrible movies. Why didn’t the actor at one point just look up and say, “Seriously, NO ONE is going to sit through this shit. Am I the only one to notice this?”

daynah says:

I wont lie. I don’t know half the words you said there. My expertise in syntax does not carry over into semantics.

Dan said:

Wow, all this silly pontificating goes really well with my patriarch-ish-looking 1844 daguerreo-tar, doesn’t it?

daynah says:

Golly, I talk too much!

daynah says:

Being business savy is very important. I go to a university that has a high ranking business school and we get business lessons injected into all of the disciplines. It’s constantly, “How can I make money with this?” and “How can I market this?” I know, because of this training, that I’m better off going into the real world with this very practical degree, that someone with a a degree from a nose-in-their-books school.

daynah says:

Valerie (Occasional Superheroine) is super-fab. I always find her blogs fun to read, where as some other women comic-readers blog nothing but “blah blah whine whine, not enough women readers.”

Todd Michael R. says:

...for fucks sake.

Todd Michael R. says:

Now how we doin? (and thanks)

Todd Michael R. says:

p.s. great bio. that is brilliant.

Todd Michael R. says:

well I can’t fuckin see it.

Help me out.

daynah says:

Thanks! I can’t really pull off evil, though the photographer also wanted me to. :) I’ve got crazy baby cheeks. There are some other pictures of me on the photographer’s website where I look manical… but I was going for sexy! Just proof that I should really just stick to the cute… and never be a stripper.

Dan said:

Dan says: I dug his Starslammers and Manhunter. I guess I'll have to give his Thor run a go, too.
Jason Copland says: Yeah, that Simonson run on Thor is the best Thor stuff ever. It even beats the Lee/Kirby stuff. When I think of Thor, my mind goes straight to Simonson's run.
Dan says: Thanks, Todd!
Todd Michael R. says: Dan, I love the layout of this site, it looks great.
Matt says: Sounds good. The idea of Michael Caine as a DJ is infinitely amusing to me. Here's the details on that Simonson Thor series, too: http://heavyink.com/graphic_novel/ 1625-Thor-Visionaries-Walt-Simonson-Vol-1 Heavy Ink has vol. 1 up (so far) for sale, and I believe they're up to at least Vol. 4, with 5 on the way, and I think that wraps up the entire run collected. It is goooooood stuff, but like I said, whackadoo. (The web address is wacky without line breaks but if you search it's there.)
Dan says: The import price is pretty outrageous, but if I yield to temptation and get it anyway, I'll certainly post something review-ish.
Matt says: Y'know, I remember reading about the Michael Caine mixtape album, and thinking, HOW COOL, and then forgetting about it. I need to track that down too. If you get it, Dan, let us know if it's any good.
Dan says: Yeah - check this out. And note the double entendre. That's pretty cool. (I don't have the disc, but have been meaning to get it)
Matt says: I think I would honestly allow Michael Caine to shoot me. He's just that cool.
Dan says: (I assume that pic is from Get Carter, but I've never seen it)
Dan says: Yeah, NZC, that's Michael Caine. Tyler, any Burrito money you give me will just wind up being lent out to TJIC, you can just give it straight to him...
nzc says: Is that Michael Caine?
Tyler says: I feel threatened by your new avatar. Heres my lunch money...
Dan says: LOL
Matt says: Do you need approval, Dan? You're a GOOD person. People LIKE you. Hope that helps.
Dan says: Wow - approved already!
Dan says: (this one's temporary, too - I'm planning on changing it very frequently)
Dan says: OK, swapped it for another one, should show up at the end of the day tomorrow.
Dan says: It's just temporary...
nzc says: Nice image. Dan.
Tyler says: Nonsense! I'm simply the builder of dreams of others.
Dan says: Thanks guys. I'm looking forward to improving it as HI grows. BTW, Tyler did more than just code - he was a huge help with the design work.
Matt says: Great work Dan!
nzc says: Huzzah!
TJIC says: Amazing graphic design on HeavyInk.com, Dan! It ** rocks **.
