If you take, a Muslim audience, GI Joe style violence (i.e. virtually none), Xmen (and/or Heroes), mix them together in a box and have it put to a comic book by some slightly better than average comic artists, you’ll get “The 99”. Its geared toward a younger crowd, pretty tame stuff. This may be good if you want to avoid the typical R rated comics around today. The story is not bad and is believable enough. The 99 are power stones that allow super powers. If you’re Muslim, you may recognize the 99 “powers” story as more than that, I don’t.
Pretty tame by anyones standards, its practically rated G. No sexual situations, no dirty talk, no blood. If you have kids that are clamoring for a comic and you’re disgusted at the standard fare, you’ll probably find a good middle ground for the kids here. Its not so preachy about morals that the kids will be rolling their eyes, but good guys are generally good, bad guys made to look bad and selfish.
The drawing is nice, the coloring is not very inspired but serviceable. The panorama scenes are somewhat bland but get the point across.
I’m getting up around issue 10, the story is not so gripping that its keeping my attention. I like a couple characters enough to care to see what happens (I like Jabbar and Noora) so I’ll keep the subscription, hopefully it will get better as it goes…
