Not that bad. I think Tony Daniel acquitted himself well against all the naysayers who were crying about his getting picked for the authorship of this story. I feel like Mike Marts, Dan Didio, and Grant Morrison already had this thing pegged down anyway. The ultimate ending and repercussions (Morrison/Quitely and their Nightwing and Damien er, that is, Batman and Robin series) were predetermined. Anyone could have followed the editorial mandate, but at least we’re not talking about the kind of hack writing that comic fans endured in the mid-90’s from superstar artists such as Liefeld and McFarlane (No one can tell me that early Spawn was well-written and thought provoking). From what I understand, Daniel has written in the past, just not something this high profile. I for one was not displeased with the dialogue, but they are telegraphing the outcome of this and where everyone will stand in a few months. That’s Didio’s fault for releasing the Quitely art so soon. I’m sick of waiting for books to be released (Gaimen/Kubert’s Detective issue for instance) and now they put Quitely on the new monthly Batman. Oh well, at least Tim Drake will still be around in Action Comics as half of the Nightwing and Flamebird duo. His new partner, I believe was shown in the opening sequence of Battle. She’s cute and from England, and they just work together so well (Tim’s words). I guess my only complaint is that all of the teaser material and leaks on the web have made this series (like everything else from DC lately) anticlimatic.
