As World War Hulk reaches its conclusion, it's time for Zom to step up to the plate for a round against the Green Goliath.

I know what you're thinking--"Zom?! Who the frak is that?" My sentiments exactly. Apparently, Zom is an extradimensional demon who dates back to some of the first Doctor Strange tales EVER, from 1967. He's gotten out a few times since then, but mostly he's sat inside a jar in the good Doctor's Sanctum Sanctorum, just waiting for the day when he'll be needed as a classic obscure Deus Ex Machina.

I appreciate writer Greg Pak's dedication to the back pages of his Essential Official Handbook to the Marvel Universe, but there's a sense in which pulling something like Zom out of his hat for a fight with the Hulk seems like too far a reach. So far, the storytelling here has been tighter than tight, with all the logical characters appearing for all the right reasons and behaving in all the smartest ways.

Zom? Not so logical and not so smart; at the end of the day, it's hard to believe someone like Stephen Strange would open up his mortal form and his mystical powers to a demon, even if his intentions are good.

So a bit of a stumble here as World War Hulk leaps toward its conclusion. Still some great fights, though, and if the series needed a "filler" issue of sorts to get the story toward the big Sentry/Hulk faceoff it seems to be building toward, then it sure could have been a lot worse.

In other words, it could have involved Clor.
