Kurt Busiek's run on Superman since the One Year Later launch is one of the great, underrated runs in comics right now. It doesn't have the marquee value of Brubaker's Captain America, Johns' Green Lantern, or Morrison's Batman, but it is just as good as any of those top-flight series.

Unfortunately, the oddities of scheduling and a ripple effect of delays across the Superman books has wreaked havoc with Busiek's first storyline, "Camelot Falls," to the extent that we're just now seeing the first part of the grand finale, after the first part of the story ended several issues ago. We also won't see the second part of this finale until November's Superman Annual, while the main story of the Superman book hops over to another three-part arc.

Which is a long way of saying that this issue is okay to good, but this storyline is pretty great. Busiek's a great single-issue writer, but this is one story that will probably read better in the trades, if only because you will be able to sit down and actually consume it all in one swoop.

Every character is at the top of their characterization here--Superman, Lois, Arion, Zatanna all shine. I love Busiek's writing of the Superman/Lois marriage; it is proof positive that any great writer can make any marriage work in comics, as something interesting and fun, and not just something that "cuts off an avenue of stories," as if the only "story avenue" available to a superhero with a personal life is dating or casual sex.

Carlos Pacheco is a man born to draw Superman, and he stuns in this issue yet again, with one full-page spread that just sticks in your brain and makes you think again and again, "Gosh that kicks ass."

Not a great jumping-on point, and not a perfect issue by any means, but Busiek and Pacheco are still delivering big-time on this title, and it's worth tracking down floppies or collections down the line to consume it all in one fail swoop.
