Finally! We get to find out more about Mike Mignola's take on The Shadow. Not specifically The Shadow, but that kind of character – a secretive, humorless figure driven to exact justice. You know that type - highly physical with no overly obvious powers, just guns, fists, and a team of helpers.

Mignola has handed to art duties over to Jason Armstrong, who nicely joins the list of artists who do not draw like Mike, but whose personal styles suit the tone of the Hellboy universe nicely. It must be all the shadows. Or maybe putting a Mignola cover on it is all we need. It's all I need in order to part with my cold hard cash, that's for sure.

The first issue doesn't offer much about the titular man, but the stage is set – in this case in 1939 – and we are introduced to a man on the run from the growing German menace, as well as a number of Johnson's support crew. The story is light and moves fast, leaving me wishing there had been more, but then I guess that just means they can be sure I'll get the next issue.

It doesn't matter – the dude fights a monster right away. I'd go into details, but I don't want to give anything away. Can't wait for the rest of the mini-series.
