Jimmy Olsen has just uncovered the story of his career. While covering the mega battle between Superman and Atlas, Jimmy snaps a few shots of a sinister character floating among the rooftops of Metropolis. Jimmy recognizes the face and soon realizes it is a man named Jonathan Drew that he covered in a story years earlier. As Jimmy digs into Jonathan’s past he discovers a shocking conspiracy that threatens the life of his best pal Superman.

I picked up this one shot issue only because it is a prequel to the upcoming New Krypton story arc that will run through DC’s main Superman titles. Truth be told I wasn’t expecting much and the cover really didn’t do much for me. However, I was pleasantly surprised at both the depth of this story and how much it pulled me in.

Clark has an appearance early on, but nowhere do we see Superman throughout this issue. Nor do we need to. Jimmy effortlessly carries the story with his endearing charm and relentless search for answers. Along the way Jimmy crosses paths with some classic DC villains and heroes that have been updated to fit nicely in this story. By the end of the issue we are left with some startling revelations that will no doubt make New Krypton that much more intriguing.

Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen is actually a classic series that ran from 1954-74 and was full of several strange character transformations for Jimmy. This updated special works both us a New Krypton preview and also a nice little shout out to the original. Even though this is a one shot issue, I can’t help but see the potential here for a new Jimmy Olsen series.

This issue really is a must own for Superman fans. James Robinson continues his great writing from the Superman title and really paves the way for Merino and company to shine with some impressive spreads and nice cross page panels. Don’t let the cover fool you. This one is definitely worth pulling.
