This spinoff of Willingham’s Fables title stars Jack, the immortal fictional hero of many a fairy tale, including Jack and the Beanstalk, Jack the Giant Killer, and more. Akins delivers clean artwork that’s just slightly cartoony, providing a perfect setting for Jack’s offbeat adventures.

This issue serves as an interlude of sorts, allowing Jack to share his unique perspective on his origins. Jack has been embroiled in an argument with John of Fables, a doppelganger of Jack, about who is the original and who is the copy.

Gary, the Pathetic Fallacy, settles the argument once and for all, creating a new status for Jack among Fables, and alluding to the “storyverse,” presumably the bigger universe that encompasses fictional concepts. Beyond that, however, most of the issue tracks other plot threads, updating us on The Golden Boughs, the Fable retirement home/prison, and revealing Gary’s unique family relationship. Pieces are moved into place, characters are spurred onward toward confrontation, but the reality is that this issue is meaningful only in context to preceding and upcoming issues.
