This book reminded me of a bit Patton Oswalt did on his Werewolves and Lollypopes album. He’s talking about birthdays and how some should be celebrated and some shouldn’t; “12? You get a birthday, because this is your last year a kid. 13? You get an awesome birthday because now you’re a teenager. So cool, right? 14? Thbbt, no birthday. Nothing special at all. 15? I can make a learners permit, who gives a sh*t, back to school. No birthday.”
This issue read as a non-event to me. Some might point that I’m just unitiate to the DCU, but who cares? I have little or no idea what’s going on in Final Crisis and I’m enjoying that immensely. That was was the whole basis for this purchase, my reasoning being “geez, this is such an epic story, it feels like it should just spill over everywhere. Surely all of their spinoffs are directly and inistricably linked to Final Crisis! And man, if Final Crisis is that good, surely these are to?” Not the case. At all. It took all 30+ pages to get to only one point of interest; Spectre attempting to execute Libra (I had wondered what would happen if that was attempted). No context for what Montoya was doing and where, and how the hell did Light go from bashfully asking for some Super-Viagra with his date with Gigantra in FC 1 to getting ready to rape 3 superheroines in this? maybe I have to read another two or three tie-ins to get there, but I probably won’t bother to.
Long story short, the writing was overwraught to me (Cripus whining to God just felt way too overthetop) and the art wasn’t my thing – I can appreciate the skill behind it, but it just wasn’t my cup of tea..
All in all, an issue I wish I hadn’t bought.
