Need it be said that things do not go well for the grizzled old warhorse and his ranks?
One of Pak's strengths here is the different shades of grey he's building into the story and the characters. You root for the Hulk, even though he's being unforgiving and merciless; yet you feel for Tony Stark, Reed Richards, and the rest of the Illuminati, who were wrong to exile the Hulk but maybe haven't earned the level of hatred being flung in their direction.
There's no more grey figure in the Hulk supporting cast than Thunderbolt Ross. In a sense, he represents the abstract fear of the unknown that each of us has felt in the presence of that which is larger than ourselves. Instead of reacting to the Hulk with awe, wonder, or even just simple mercy, he overreacts with a mighty rage of his own. That rage has blossomed to the point where it's hard to tell where the righteous battling of this warrior ends and the frantic mania of an obsessive enemy begins.
This is just another example of how World War Hulk has become perhaps the smartest big superhero crossover in years and years. Also, there are pretty pictures of big dudes punching other big dudes, and using the cannons of tanks to swat other tanks around, and clapping their hands together so hard that a bunch of soldiers fall down. So that's cool too.
