Customer Reviews
As a sucker for superheros in training books, like PS238... actually, that might be the only one. I'll start again.
As I like PS238, I thought I'd give the Umbrella Academy a try. And I didn't even know the creator was the lead singer of My Chemical Romance - not that it would have mattered, as I am old and a stuffed shirt.
The first issue is, given what appears to be an ambitious story arc, a lot of set up that leaves the reader a little dizzy and a little baffled. Partly because of course not everything is going to be revealed in the first issue, but mostly because what is revealed is sooo crazy at times, and comes at one so fast, a person can't even begin to process it all enough to start making guesses.
You have to admit, that's a hell of a way to catch reader attention for a new series.
I will admit that I had some concerns when I found the MCR connection. I remember the Glenn Danzig comics, way back when. But a little research uncovered the fact that Gerard Way started in comics and only took a left turn into emo-rock after being in New York on Sept. 11.
Instead of a mopy, whingy, art comic, The Umbrella Academy is merely moody and atmospheric, if a little frenetic at first.
As a sneak preview, by issue two, I'm sold on the series.
