Bought this as a back issue. I really must admit that the quirky Nguyen art really appeals to me on this title, but I’m not certain I’m going to like Detective when it reboots in June. I like how Dini and Nguyen gave old fans like me a place to read solid Detective Stories like the ones we grew up on. To me, the Batman of the 70’s and 80’s is the icon. I also have enjoyed the mid-60’s “new look” stories through various reprints. I even like the early Kane/Finger stories for their moody vigilatism (Batman with a gun, Batman allowing criminals to plunge to their deaths, shooting vampires with silver bullets). That’s right, he was a true outlaw vigilante for about a dozen stories, and then editorial told the creators to tone it down. The result was Robin. We won’t even dare speak of the 1950’s through early 1964, when Batman was a parody of his former self and much more like the TV series than long-time fans and critics wish to admit. Anyway, I’ll give the new series a try, but I’m anxiously awaiting what DC plans to do with Bruce Wayne. The whole Final Crisis ending was stupid, but showing us Wayne in caveman guise was ridiculous.
