So maybe I should downgrade my rating from 5 stars to 4 or 3 stars, because I am about to complain.
Conan #50 wraps up “The Hand of Nergal” story line started in #47. The arc also introduced the Tim Truman/Tomas Giorello team that will be heading the new “Conan the Cimmerian” title.
First of all, the art work was very good. Not as good as Cary Nord’s pencils in my opinion, but still evoking the feel of Conan and the Hyborian Age. 4 stars.
Second, the story. As the conclusion to the story arc, it was satisfying. Although there were like 2 different baddies in the story (which Conan overcame, natch), and I felt the Zombie Gunderman was kind of just tacked in there so they could say it was based on REH’s unfinished story fragment (which I have not personally read). 4 stars with extra credit as the conclusion to the story.
Third, the extras. Double-sized issue #50! With a higher price tag! Half of the book was a reprint of Roy Thomas’ take on REH’s story fragment from the 1970 Marvel Comic’s title. I didn’t even read it, maybe it is cool to compare the two, but not for me. Thomas took 1 issue for his take on the story and Truman took 4 issues, I’m not sure what that means, but there you go. 2 stars.
I gave it 5 stars because I had a lot of entertainment while I was reading it. It was satisfying. In retrospect, maybe I didn’t love it as much as I though.
