I had hoped that yet another retelling of the Legion might capture the magic of the early Adventure tales—not the same representation or storytelling, but an updated version that still manages to create the appeal of this underestimated group of heroes. But this retelling is woefully inadequate. The art is uneven and even poor at times (the characters look skeletonish, even for teenagers, while Superboy’s facial features are drawn so differently that he sometimes looks like a completely different person).

The story is self-consciously “fraternal”—so much teenage bonding, kissing, flirting, and have a good ol’ time with buds that the authors forget the name of the comic (Adventure). Too much of a feel-good story, not enough plot.

I hope the next few issues manage a better blend of interpersonal teenage dynamics with a compelling story. The Legion has so much potential yet never hasn’t been steadily well written/drawn for many years.
