The fact is, I haven't been particularly happy with the World War Hulk series. I appreciated the elegance of tossing the Hulk into space, in order to remove the one loose cannon that would otherwise mess with the Civil War. I genuinely liked the idea of the Hulk finally growing as a character – presented with no real challenge, the Hulk has always been a child. Petulant might-makes-right, painted green. On Planet Hulk we see him grow, Conan-like, into a king. Awesome.

And then they killed his wife and child now he’s coming to…threaten people a lot, smack em around. Really, it’s kind of the lamest revenge story ever. You would think Marvel would understand that they dealt the Hulk a critical blow – nobody walks away from the murder (let alone death) of their family the same person they were before. So one would expect that World War Hulk would be a little more no-holds barred. You would think there would be a death or two, something that would ensure the Marvel universe would be dealing with this for years to come.

But no. He just talks a lot.

Meanwhile, Marvel has started a new, limited run of What If…? stories, starting with What If…? Planet Hulk. In it are three stories – one where the Hulk dies and his wife and child live, which leads to predictable, and strangely more satisfying parallels to World War Hulk. Call it World War Caiera if you will. The second story is the true What If…? The one that truly could never be – the one where the Hulk got his peaceful planet and lived happily ever after. Silly, but a nice take on the Jekyll and Hyde relationship between Hulk and Bruce Banner. And thirdly, we get a one page filler by Fred Hembeck, which is… well, I wish I’d gotten the Marvel kids instead.

But all in all, not a bad investment. If anything, I wish the lead story had been long – to encapsulate part of Planet Hulk and all of World War Hulk into a single half book story is too short. But anything more and I’d have a new complaint.

Paying for the same series (sort of) twice.
