I love Frank Miller. Really, I do.

And I have faith in his ability to create a really kickass movie version of The Spirit that honors the original work and also reflects his personal artistic vision.

But still…

I think io9’s got it right—it looks VERY Sin City.

Am I right, or am I nuts?!

When I saw the previews on the screen, I actually thought, “How come no one informed me of a Sin City 2?”

You’re not nuts, or bananas or crazy. This has Sin City 2 written all over it. Frank Miller’s work on Daredevil, Batman, Wolverine, Ronin and 300 to a lesser extent influenced my formative years and early appreciation/devotion to the medium. So in that sense, I owe the guy a lot. He was a pioneer, icon, living legend, innovator.

Now? Sorry to say, not so much. His more recent comic efforts have been retreads of former iconic work. I’m talking about The Dark Knight Strikes Again and the currently in limbo and sub-par Batman and Robin. I mean come on, Batman beating the crap out of Robin for no good reason?!! Is there ever a “good reason” for child abuse?) Plus Batman cackling like the Joker (“Ha, ha,ha!”) and taking way too much glee in beating criminals to a bloody pulp. If I had kids, I certainly wouldn’t let them read this souless, violent, mediocre piece of Frank-Lite. Jim Lee dserves better writing to compliment his outstanding work on this series.

Now Frank seems more interested in suckling at the teats of Hollwood. You’d think he’d have learned his lesson with Robo Cop. He was and could still be a master of the comic book medium, but I don’t have nearly as much faith that his skills include directing. The Spirit trailer has Frank’s signature stamp all over it.But why call it Will Eisner’s The Spirit if you’re not going to honor the look, style and dialogue of the man’s work? Just because they were presumably buddies before Mr. Eisner passed away, doesn’t make Frank the ideal candidate to direct screen versions of Eisner’s beloved works. No wonder Alan Moore is so bitter towards Hollywood for turning his masterpieces into crap.

I have a feeling come Christmas the ghost of Eisner will feel a strong urge to bitch slap his former friend for making Frank Miller’s The Spirit and not Eisner’s. A pity really. The project seemed to hold promise. I hope to be proved wrong, but the writing seems to be on the wall with this adaptation. I predict it will vanish from theater faster than Teen Wolf 2 and DVDs will hit the shelves a few months after it’s release. Bummer dudes. We and especially Will Eisner deserved much better.

I saw “The Spirit” last week and was disapointed. It was NO “Sin City”. I think that it tried to be too PG13. Not recommended.
