Andy,
Just wanted to let you know that I ordered two copies of Iron man 21. I would like to get one of each 50/50 cover. Hope this is possible. I do not want the 2nd print cover because I have that one. I tries to send a message through the contact us link, but it would not go through.
already ordered the first issue, thx – i’ll sub now, to start with #2… it’ll be easier to remember to unsub if i don’t like it than to remember to sub if i do… ;-)
So, I just took a look at Siege #1 Cover 5, it’s the reprint-they’re-not-calling-a-reprint “director’s cut” of the issue, and it’s not an incentive cover, so no way will it be bagged/boarded.
Hey Andy, I have placed to orders for graphic novels (3 Atomic Robos+Shirt, and then in the other order Rex, and Watchmen.) I noticed that the status on all of them are “PENDING” I was wondering if this was just because you have many orders or perhaps there is a technical difficulty. If it is the latter, there are some places that wont ship to me because they think my address is all wrong, but I can assure you that it is not. Well, anyways, I’d appreciate enlightenment on the situation when you have time. Thank you Andy, and I eagerly anticipate a reply.
Hey Andy, read Jericho last night. And yeah, I have to agree with you on the art. When I first read your blurb, I figured I would think differently about it. Not sure why. But anyway, the story was good enough for me to keep turning the pages. Looking forward to where they take this.
Hey man, what did you think of Jericho S3 #1? I thought the story was solid, wish the art was a little better. I thought this was such a cool TV series, and I’m confident the writers are playing it out well.
Great, thanks Andy. Much appreciated. Meanwhile, I am patiently awaiting my first shipment since ordering again. :) Hopefully it will come today (Saturday).
Hi Desha, just letting you know that the Strangers In Paradise Omnibus you ordered DOES appear on our invoice for this week, which is an encouraging sign. I fully expect to receive this and be able to ship it to you.
yeah, had seen that this morning as I’m subscribed to get notice about anything by Chris Giarusso. :) Just subscribed to it, even though I think it reprints a lot of stuff that I already have. My son will eat it anyway though. :)
hey andy—i took a stab at your email addy and sent you a message. if you didn’t get it, just email me at anelson41 at gmail.com and I’ll resend the message
Hi Alex. Diamond somehow flushed our solicitation for Moon knight 26. I’ve been trying to reorder it, but so far no dice. I’m sorry for the confusion… they don’t know when/if they’ll be shipping any more.

Hi Alex… I spoke with our Diamond rep yesterday, it’s a shipping mixup on their part. We didn’t receive it this week, but it should be in soon. Sorry for the delay!
I just love love love Darwyn Cooke, and he really gets to show off his chops here as a writer as well as an artist. The feature Batman story “Ego” is one of Cooke’s first works in comics, and it’s okay but not great, definitely an early work. The GOLD here though is the longest piece in the book, “Selina’s Big Score”. It’s just a solid heist story featuring Selina Kyle and a character named Stark (clearly based on Lee Marvin in Point Blank), and there’s nary a cape in sight. It reads like a practice run for Cooke’s adaptation of Parker The Hunter (excellent, in case you haven’t heard), and you guys KNOW it’s awesome if I’m recommending it, seeing as I have no great familiarity with the DC Universe and virtually no prior interest in Catwoman as a character. A-1 stuff here.
Sometimes I get an email from a customer about one thing or another, and it’s clear they appreciate all the hard work we do around here, and it makes it all worth it.
And sometimes I open my…

This is the series spun out of Point Blank (which itself is spun out of Alan Moore’s run on Wildcats, but no matter), brought to you by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, the same creative team behind Criminal and Incognito. Here’s where the team comes together, in this fantastic story of a superpowered secret agent desperate to be brought in from the cold. I’m hesitant to say much more though, because the twists and turns are so wild I don’t want to spoil anything. Suffice it to say I COULD NOT put this down! Great on so many levels. Do be aware that this is for “mature audiences”, full of language, sex and violence, and a fair degree of superhero hate (which I usually don’t go for, but it’s used wonderfully here).
Anyone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think that will get you the 1:10 Cooke Variant.
True. You’re going to have to take your chances the day it comes out here.
No, Oldy, it’s right in the beginning, though the newscaster is speaking over it…

I’ll let it drop in favor of discussing the comics themselves.

After this week’s epic tête-à-tête I think next week’s GN of the week is going to be this…
Frank Miller’s first work post- Dark Knight Returns is this thrilling retelling of the classic Batman origin story, with all of the hits and bits that are hallmarks of Miller’s writing (strong characterizations of Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon, great internal monologues, etc). The story has always seemed a bit underdone to me, though possibly this is because unlike The Dark Knight Returns Miller knew he was writing this for the main DC continuity. I don’t know. What makes this an essential volume though is the art- David Mazzucchelli’s pencil and ink work and Richmond Lewis’s colors (watercolors, they look like to me) are just marvelous. Reading this again recently I note that there are a lot of ideas here that made it onto the screen in The Dark Knight film, like the sonar bat call and, well, a whole hell of a lot about Jim Gordon. Definitely a keeper!
I know how Miller’s arc ends but it’s been a really long time… I recall no dropoff in quality, in fact, the very last issue is considered one of the all-time classics.

Someone said to me recently “hey, remember when no one knew any of Wolverine’s back story and he was the coolest character in comics?” Ah, the good old days. Long before we had Joe Q’s “official” origin story (bone claws… pfft!) all we had were little glimpses into Logan’s past, and Barry Windsor-Smith’s Weapon X was the most tantalizing. By the time this came out in 1991 we’d already seen Claremont and Miller’s take on Logan’s exploits in Japan, the story of Mac and Heather Hudson finding Logan reduced to a feral state in the wilderness from the original Alpha Flight series, and even tales of Logan’s WWII exploits with Captain America and Natasha Romanoff. But until the 1991 release of Weapon X (in the pages of Marvel Comics Presents) there had been nothing like this.
Barry Windsor-Smith was no stranger to the world of the X-Men, having notably co-written and illustrated Uncanny X-Men #198 and #205 (a Storm feature and a Wolverine feature, respectively), and Weapon X is entirely his baby. Script, pencils, inks, colors, hell, a lot of the lettering- all his. It’s a great, signature piece of work. The detail in Windsor-Smith’s linework is incredible, and his coloring is incredibly subtle and complimentary.
This is no picnic. the depictions of Logan’s handling (torture) at the hands of the Weapon X program are pretty brutal, by 1991 standards. Not because they’re particularly graphic, but because they’re so manipulative. You feel every poke and prod right along with your hero, and are just as twisted up by the end as poor Logan. You know he’s going to turn out okay, but this is certainly his trial, his passion, as it were.
So yeah. They just don’t make Wolverine stories like this anymore. Check this one out!
