Hi Ken, I think we were talking a while back about “Wolverine – Saudade” ...did you ever get a chance to read it? Just wondering if you enjoyed it.

Alex Sheikman says:

I was wondering why a bunch of your posts were crossed-out…Yeah, Corben is doing some excellent work. Right now he is illustrating a 3 issue Hellboy miniseries called “Crooked Man” and he is also contributing 20 odd pages per issue for the Dark Horses re-launch of Conan (issues #1, 2, and 3). Both titles are available here on Heavyink and both are great.

“Bloodstar” is definitely a book that I want to get. I just have to find it at a price I can afford (maybe it will get reprinted someday soon).

Wallace Wood was great. I have a reprint of the Spirit strips that he assisted Will Eisner on and they are fantastic.

By the way, if you would like to communicate via regular e-mail, I have my e-mail on my website (that is in my profile).

Alex Sheikman says:

Wrightson, Wood, Corben…now we are talking! I just “discovered” Corben a few years ago with the “Banner” and “Cage” and now I can’t get enough of his artwork. I am loving his current Hellboy miniseries and the Conan issues that he is doing.

I tend to follow artist and writers around rather than any particular characters or titles. Anything by Barry Smith, Adam Hughes, Kaluta, Rick Leonardi, Ryan Sook, Sandy Plunkett, Neal Adams, Michael Golden (!), Kevin Nowlan…..

I am also surprised by the fact that I am enjoying “Old Man Logan”. The last thing that I read by MIllar was “Wanted” and I did not like that too much. But this is interesting.

Alex Sheikman says:

If you do pick-up Artesia do let me know how you like it…I did not know what to expect, but I really enojoyed it.

What did you think of “Wolverine Saudade”? I thought the art was wonderful and I enjoyed reading a Wolverine story that was had a different twist to it.

Alex Sheikman says:

If you have enjoyed the “Game of Thrones” you might enjoy Mark Smylie’s “Artesia”. Intrigue, magic, and battles…all drawn in a beautiful painterly style.

Alex Sheikman says:

I agree that the epic sci-fi is not something that is done in comics very often…it might be because of the medium itself. Some of the books that you mentioned would be very hard to adapt into comics because of the illustration challenges. I mean just a few lines from any of those could turn into half an issue worth of “world building”/establishing settings. I do think there were some real decent series last few years that tried, like “Reign of the Zodiac”, “Human Defense Corps”, “Hammerlocke”...

Alex Sheikman says:

Did you ever read any of the “StarReach” comics? They wre being published in the late 70’s and had lots of great sci-fi short stories by some great artists/writers. That was also the place that “Sacred and Profane” first got serialized.

Ken says:

Rhetorical question: Why isn’t GOOD scifi made into comics??
